The Best Eateries in the Area - IMHO!

After having spent my children's inheritance of dining I can now report my findings...

7th Ave - I know some have reported negatively about this BUT, Sette at 3rd and 7th is a fabulous restaurant (have now eaten there many times) - and Amanda Freitag is among the best chefs in the city - and 20 bottles of suggested wines for $20.00 per bottle is a rare find! Sette is actually the only place I'd spend $$$ on 7th

5th Ave - Al Di La - the best of all! Emiliano Coppa and Anna Klinger have the best thing going - and I love the no reservations policy, makes me go at different times.

Blue Ribbon Sushi - simply the best sushi anywhere in Brooklyn.

Stone Park Cafe - another sign that culinary excellence has come to Brooklyn!

11th Street between 7th and 8th - Applewood - a real class act - great food.

Boerum Hill - Saul Restaurant (my pick for best in Brooklyn period!) If it's fish you want, then it's Saul, hands down. And guess where Saul Bolton and his wife Lisa eat with their kids? Al Di La!

Others:
Noodle Pudding on Henry Street - very good rustic Italian
Banania Cafe on Smith near Butler - A Latin/French bistro
The Grocery - Smith @ Sackett - geat American with best list of half-bottles around

  • How about anything cheaper? Al Di La is great and so is Blue Ribbon and Saul--but what about just meeting a friend for dinner and NOT cutting into the kid's inheritance? Those places are getting harder to find but I could use some new ideas.
  • Well, I still like 2nd Street Cafe. Minnow on 9th St @ 7th though teeny -tiny is moderately priced and has really good food. The New Prospect Cafe on Flatbush is still a hold-out as is Bonnie's Grill on 5th Ave between 1st and Garfield. Dinner at Beso on 5th is fairly reasonable also.

I could also recommend Mo-Bay in Ft. Greene on DeKalb near Nevins. It's Jamaican soul food. And a real "find" is Cambodian Cuisine on S. Elliot near Fulton in Ft Greene.
  • Personally, I like the prix fixe at Magnolia. The calamari & crab cakes are especially good.

Minnow has great food but horrible service.

I'm torn about Futura. The restaurant has a cool atmosphere, but the meals I've had there have ranged in quality each time.

I'm also a big fan of Mezcal's. Or maybe it was the $18 half pitcher of margaritas I liked so much
  • Subject: Best food

....those kids will just have to work for their food now. No biggie
  • I forget which night of the week it is, but the lovely and luscious Cocotte has a 2-for-1 entree night. Yum.

I *think* that's Tuesday night. must ask someone who knows - I want to go there asap. you know, now that you've reminded me. so good!!
  • Cheaper options:

    Seventh
Olive Vine: Great sampler platters, fresh-made pita
Mango: Decent Thai, quite good curry
    Tacqueria: Good for quick take-out

    Fifth
Bonnie's Grill: Fantastic veggie burger and fries!
    Press 195: Excellent panini
Los Pollitos II: Easily the best Mexican in the Slope, hands down. Try the sopes.
Chip Shop: The old standard. Good once every two months for grease overload.
  • I "think" Cocotte switched their 2fer day to Thursday.
  • I had a pretty good prixe fix at Chestnut on Smith Street on a Tuesday night. $25 and you can pick off the ENTIRE menu which was very good and they pour a generous glass of wine.
  • I know I am going to get flamed for saying this since there seems to be such strong negative feeling about it on this board, but I'll throw out Aunt Suzi's on 5th. No, it is not haute cuisine, but I've had solid, enjoyable, cheap, meals with friendly and relaxed service. OK - flame away.
Also - I wonder why no one has mentioned La Villa. Their pizza is excellent and the eggplant parm is always very good. A good, relatively cheap, option.
Last vote - on 7th you can't do much better on the quality and cheap scale than Mr. Falafel.
  • LaVilla is my favorite local restaurant. Their weekly special of ricotta gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce is amazing, as is their regular marinara. Portions are huge, and every dish I've ever had there (been there about 15 times) has been great. Their tomato bruschetta is amazing too - something in the way they marinate the tomatoes.
  • I also have a soft spot for 200 Fifth. Consistantly good food at reasonable prices.
  • I really like 200 5th.

I won't go near Mr. Falafel after biting into a sandwich years ago and finding a roach-it was about 6 years ago-but, enough to keep me away.
  • the best place to eat in park slope is joe's pizza on 7th ave. for a long time it was smiling and pino's pizza, but something about the quality of their food just went down in recent years. joe's pizza is the best right now
  • I hate this thread... I hated it the last 24 versions of it also. Just saying.
  • wow, a 3 year old thread is resurrected simply to make a point about a pizzeria

hee hee, damn is Apple Pants back

    That's now ancient history.
  • Seriously ApplePants = Yankee Fan?

No he's not, I was kidding. No offense Yankee.

  • 2nd Street Cafe...sigh. Cocoette...double sigh. Some REAL gems have been lost to the ages. I fear for what's next.
