Coffee? Beer? — Brooklynian

Coffee? Beer?

Hey,

My wife and I are considering moving to Sunset Park. We love the food in the area, plus the park itself, but whenever we've taken a walk around we've never stumbled across a nice coffee shop or bar - the type of place where you can go with a laptop to work (as freelancers it's something that's important to us). Is there anything like this anywhere in the area, or is it always going to mean a quick trip up to South Slope/Park Slope?

Thanks!

  • Unfortunately, after two years of living in Sunset Park (and my husband and I are both freelancers as well), I have yet to find those things. A lot of people in the neighborhood would really appreciate a cafe where one can go with his/her laptop and work, but nobody has opened one yet. Ditto for bars, save for Irish Haven, which is a hike from my place (I live in the 40s near the park). I do tend to go to the Slope for such amenities....
  • Subject: Coffee shops and some relaxing restaurant choices

    LET ME PREFACE:

I am typing this at midnight. Please excuse the grammar and spelling errors.

I also live in Sunset Park. I live in the 40's right on 4th.

If you are in Greenwood then there definitely is one great "trendy" coffee shop for you! On 17th and 5th is a place called called Roots Cafe. It is small and cozy and has WIFI. The coffee is great and so are the baked goodies.

In Sunset Park proper, you may have to be a bit more creative. While the following places will let you sit and linger with a laptop for hours, they are NOT "coffee shops" per se, but are restaurants that serve coffee and let you linger over your coffee.

Eclipse on 4th and 45th has a really good vibe where you can sit around. Its more of a restaurant but you can get wine and coffee there. Its got a nice "trendy" vibe. No wifi though.

Los Petrillos is on 4th avenue and 39th street it is also a restaurant, but there is plenty of seating and they don't kick you out. They serve coffee 24 hours and are a 24 hours establishment. The bad news is that depending on the time, it may be full of people who want to play Mexican music from the jukebox. If you go in the afternoons on the weekdays, weekend afternoons, or in the early morning on weekends and weekdays you will not run into the "Mexican music on the jukebox" crowd. I have read many a novel there. At times I have actually put together my lecture notes (hours of work) for a general psychology class I teach. I completed that task while sitting in Los Petrillos.

I believe there was a newly opened coffee place on 46th and 4th ave. My memory is hazy regarding the details. I stepped into one somewhere around there briefly, but I noticed that there wasn't adequate seating (its a small place with stools for seats) and I left.

Many people will tell you about the Sunset Park Donuts & Diner on 39th and 5th. It is a coffee shop restaurant. HOWEVER, I will warn you that they have failed some inspections recently and I saw a roach crawl onto my table, when I last ate there.

Dunkin Donuts on 3rd and 35th has plenty of seating, it is relatively quiet and they don't kick you out if you sit with your coffee for awhile.

Maria's on 39th and 5th has an outdoor patio that is great in the spring and summer for just having coffee and sitting outside. Lingering is dependent on crowd size, it gets crowded sometimes. The vibe inside the place is quite nice and trendy. They serve strong but VERY SWEET drinks.

On 41st and 2nd avenue there is a Deli Pizza shop that has seating and actually is pretty huge. It's got a salad bar too.
  • Maria's Bistro on 39th and 5th offer Wifi and a good bar. Great drinks and a decent atmosphere. I use the wifi here frequently as a freelancer, and I have seen a couple of others here lately. The wifi is password protected but you just need to ask for the password. There are no 'comfy' chairs as such but the bar or tables are more than adequate and there is also power sockets in a few places.
  • south side coffee, 19th street and 6th ave.
  • Thanks for the tip about Maria's - will definitely try that once we're through with lugging boxes from apartment to apartment, and I have no problems sitting at the bar to work!
  • Roots on 18th (I think) and 5th has free WiFi and plenty of chairs/sofas and outlets galore.

The coffee is also pretty good, and the sandwiches are tasty. That's the only reason I go to Roots over Soutside, Roots has FOOD!
