Pants De-Pleatified (or Sans Pleats Pants) — Brooklynian

Pants De-Pleatified (or Sans Pleats Pants)

In need of a reliable tailor who can remove pleats from a pair of suit pants. Suggestions?

Comments

  • have you had this done before? i've never heard of it, but unless i misunderstand what you're asking for, expect to pay a bit. as far as i can tell, removing a pleat would require either reshaping the leg or replacing the waistband as well, since the circumference of the top of the pants will be bigger without the pleat. and unless the fabric is incredibly easy to match...well, is there a reason you don't just get a different pair?
  • this is a huge amount of work, likely cheaper to buy new pants.
  • All pants should be depleated. I love this idea, and know tailors have a way of doing magic so . . . let us know what happens pls.

I think it actually makes sense if we're talking about fixing up a suit and not a pair of chinos or something.

Poke around New York magazine. There's been a number of stories in assorted local media about people redoing their clothes In This Economic Climate.
  • I go to Dynasty Tailors on E. 38th bet. 5th & Madison:

You should ask for Joe because from reading recent reviews it sounds like they have hired some other tailors who may not be very good. They are VERY expensive - I've always been very happy with Joe's tailoring but I've always been unhappy with the bill (after getting suit pants ruined at other tailors - thereby ruining the entire suit - I just grin and pay Dynasty's bill).

    Good luck!
  • I recently bought a suit at Men's Warehouse on 16th and they 'de-pleated' my suit pants for me, but as I was paying for a number of alterations and can't find my receipt, I don't know what the cost was. I have emailed the rep who helped me out to inquire about tailoring items not purchased at MW, but no reply yet. This pair I want depleated is a brandynew suit, and in my opinion worth the extra cost to depleat. I hate looking like a bloated fat-cat in pleats with an athletic cut jacket. Where are all the non-pleated suits in this world?!
  • So MW says they won't alter non-MW suits. Back to square one. On yelp and other similar sites, anyone else out there ever had pleats removed from suit pants?

Sorry, but I haven't bought a pair of pants with pleats since the '80s.
  • Put zippers on the pleats and turn them into extra pockets? plockets? pleakets?
  • This tailor can do anything... and is a lovely person:

    Sal Cristiano
    138 East 61st Street
(b/n Lex and Park) 2nd Floor
    NYC 10021
    212 752 1638

For a bonus, his brother Joseph, whose salon is immediately next to the tailor shop, is an excellent barber.

    Neither is inexpensive.

I have been going to Joseph every three weeks for decades now, and to Sal whenever my clothes need tailoring. I am not related to either.
  • Though the pockets idea is quite intriguing, I am leaning towards calling up book's pal Sal. Yelp pointed me at Mi Montuno on Wash/StJohns. Anyone ever been there? Would love to support a local business in my attempts to look less '80s - thanks carnivore. Suckah pleats be gettin on ma nerves.

men's wearhouse stinks at altering suits anyway, (the one at atlantic center anyway). I just picked up a suit and the legs are so wide it looks like a zoot suit.
