  • So let the rich connoisseurs support the local wine shops! They could be wine boutiques.
  • I'm not rich, but I buy a lot of wine and I'll definitely support Caseo's store. Just gotta figure out which one it is.

she's mentioned it on this board before, so a bit of searching will lead you to her.

I like her store....good selection, decent prices + I get my exercise in by walking home with bags o' wine
  • I like Caseo's store too, I just am usually not on that avenue, so, i tend to shop at Red, White and Bubbly. And, i agree, the supermarkets would never have the selection a small store has, probably much more mass market stuff, so, i don't think it would really take business away from local stores.

Exactly, and I will now make a bad hardware store analogy. Everyone thought Home Deport and Lowes would drive the independent (not the ones affilated with Ace or True Value) hardware stores out of business.

Many decided to affilate with Ace and True Value, but others realized that they could survive if they upped their quality and maintained their service.

Where do you go if you need a $4 brass plated hinge: Home Depot or Lowes. ...they have to special order quality.

Where do go if you need an actual brass hinge, and are willing to pay $9? A non-chain hardware store. They have it in stock.
  • I love my sweet Caseo and I will beat up Mougala for being a twat. Or really for any reason.

    Yep, I twatted.
  • I wish Caseo's store was closer, I always end up going to Sterling Grapes on 5th. I swear! I must be paying their rent in purchases!!

I must make amends and go to caseo's this week. They have a much better wine selection plus they carry Sailor Jerry, one of my favorite rums!!

Caseopele, you know more about the business than me. Do those very cheap wines make up a major part of a typical small wine store's profit?
The less expensive wines actually make up a large part of our sales. Some people do spend more on individual bottles but we sell a lot of wine under $20. It's a misconception that no small wine stores sell good wine under $10, we actually carry quite a few. They are the bread and butter of our business.

Since the "incident" I removed the name of the store from all of my posts. I've become a bit paranoid so if anyone wants to know they can PM me. I probably shouldn't have posted any of this, it might come back to bite me in the ass somehow!

Rich people don't keep small wine stores in business! It's the regulars looking for a good inexpensive bottle to go with dinner or to bring to a friend's or just to have a glass at the end of the day. People think their "small" purchases don't help local businesses but they do add up.

Mougar, thanks for explaining! I actually understand and get quite pissed at the guvmint myself on a regular basis.

Flexi, Mama, Beave, you guys are teh best! Voodoo, come and visit me at the Store That Must Not Be Named! :D
  • I'll drag Voodoo there before Mexican Easter, no worries.

And Caseo, after this whole bill thing passes or doesn't, I'll be happy to remove this post to hide your super hero identity.
  • moug -- i agree with you about dumb regulations. BUT i don't think it's fair to lift the regulations hindering one kind of store without removing those on everybody. i'd be more convinced this was free-market-ly fair if wine stores weren't going to stay restricted to one location.

btw, unless things have changed in NC since i grew up, it's hardly a bastion of free market alcohol, since only the state can sell hard liquor.

nothing has changed, the ABC store is still the only place to buy liquor.
  • the next county over from mine (pretty sure it was chatham) had a drive-thru ABC store. classic.

    Agreed

Not to hijack, but on a similarly classy southern note- in lousianna, there are drive through daiquiri places (not just in NOLA...in the rest of the state as well) where you get a margarita or a daiquiri with a STRAW in a drivethrough...it has a little piece of tape over the end of the straw. Should you be pulled over, as long as the tape is over the straw (even if half the drink is missing) its not technically an "open container." However, should the tape be missing you can get a ticket.

Way to go, Louisanna, way to go.
  • Excellent.

...even better than the "Brew Thrus" I remember in NC.
