Side Street Raceways
I would like to start a ball rolling on getting speed bumps, or some sort of speed control installed on our side streets. Drivers are flying down these streets at incredible rates and someone is going to get killed. Just an hour ago I saw some guy peel his car out from the sidewalk (he was backing up on the sidewalk because another car was double parked shutting him in) and fly down Park Place (bet Vand & Und) at around 50 mph+. So fast in fact that I couldn't make out his license plate. This is not an uncommon thing. I have lived in this area for most of my life and I have seen many terrible accidents resulting from reckless drivers. Does anyone else feel the way I do? Does anyone know how to get an action started on speed control , speed bumps or not?

The lights on Park are poorly timed. You get stuck at vandy, then again at underhill, then again at washington. They are timed close enough that if you race down the block you can sometimes squeeze through before they change.

Drivers will race down regardless. I'll put money on it. the side streets are long and give the illusion that you need to cover a long distance in as little time as possible.

I used to live on the block in question- you're certainly right, the traffic does fly through alarmingly fast at times... and there's a lot more of it than you would suspect, for a seemingly quite street.
Do speed bumps really work? I know that with the narrower ones, let's say less than 2 ft, they don't really do much unless you're already driving slowly- if you're traveling upwards of 30 mph, you barely notice them... maybe it's different with the really WIDE bumps... -
Im not sure if the usual speed bumps would work but there is something similar that is on the Staten Island Expressway right before you hit the Verazanno Bridge (going from SI to Brooklyn). It looks like paint on the ground but when you ride over it too fast it shakes your car. It seems to be very effective there. That might be a good idea for these side streets. But then again how would this affect cyclists who ride on the streets that do not have a bike lane?

I feel I must point out the hilarity of Captain M's avatar for this thread.

Rumble Stripsthose strip things are useless. i think only way to stop people from speeding is setting up speed trap by cops. after a few tickets. folks would know, not to speed in a certain area. -
we've got speed bumps over on lincoln (no doubt b/c a little neighborhood girl was hit by a hasidic drive thru a few years back) and they don't do a damn thing, imo. even i speed over them and i live on the block and curse the other speeders when i'm trying to cross the street with my kid.

a speed bump was installed on Sterling yesterday b/w Vanderbilt and Underhill- anyone know if more are planned for the other streets?
