  • Some trains are faster than others. These R160s are indeed faster than most other trains in the fleet. R46s aka "Hippos" are slower cause they're really heavy cars. R32s are super light so they're able to get to higher speeds.

Just saw this. You ventured out of your 5 block comfort zone (Hoff excluded) and actually rode a TRAIN into the CITY? WTF? Has hell finally frozen over?

Its possible that hell has frozen over.

  • thank god

i have no idea who came up with the old F train seating arrangement... the "inside" seats can't be occupied by normal sized adults, and end up acting as shelves for bags even during rush hour

the L/4-5-6/M style new trains are so much more efficient

i'm still waiting for an L train type train arrival-time display at each station... but i fear that with the F it would just depress the riding public

"the next Manhattan bound F train will depart in.... 96 minutes"

those displays are based on the new signal system that they've been installing/testing on the L. it even allows for train's to run without a train operator, but that will never be instated. it'll be a long long long time before the entire system is fitted with that new signal system.
  • i like the new 2/4/5s better than the newer new trains (Qs and, i assume, Fs). those new displays on the Q are butt-ugly and usually not working properly anyway. at least when the ones on the 2/4/5 aren't lighting up you can still see the order of the stops. on the Q, usually it tells me i'm at Ave U when i've just left 14th street. or it swears it's an N in queens somewhere. not nice for the tourists.
  • Has any one heard anything about a future long term service interruption of the F train? Some one had told me the F won't be running for a couple of months due to renovations. I cant find anything online that confirms that.
  • much as i'm all for new and shiny, the ones with the blue seats seem to hold an odd amount of people between each poll on the bench seats--too many or too few. and i wish the seats weren't so shiny... every time the train even slightly takes a corner everyone just slides in one direction.

i cannot believe that i am saying this... but i prefer the old orange and yellow seated ones
  • it's way too bright. I like to sit in the dark with all the other miserable people going to work.
  • The "new" trains allow 1/2 the number of seated passengers. This really matters to those with the longer commutes during rush hour. A "section" of the old trains allowed 3-2-2-3 the same space on the new trains hold 5. 6 if people are polite and diminutive.

Really? I have to say I love the lights- I have really horrible eyesight and struggle to read in some dimly lit trains. I hear ya that you want to hide in misery, but at least you can get lost in a novel! May I suggest The Bell Jar?

Maybe they were referring to the renovations of the Smith & 9th station that would have shut down that station for a while?

Depends on which station you use. Smith/9th will be totally closed for a few months. 15th St & Ft. Hamilton will be closed in one direction at a time for a few months. During that time the G will be extended to Church Ave, but it will also skip any stations the F is skipping. There will be temporary platforms at 4th Ave (the F & G will be running on the express track in one direction), so service will be maintained there in both directions.

I just know what I read. There have been details of the plans in http://secondavenuesagas.com and the Brooklyn Paper. Personally, I take the R a lot more often than the F, but there is nothing going on with the R now.
