Cheap, but good restaurants

I love Kitchenbar. They are very affordable and offer options for just a sandwich that comes with fries and salad, or small plates or big plates. Sometimes I get a salad and an app or a big plate could be huge roasted chicken with tons of sides.

I love love love Enzo's on PPW, between 16th and 17th. It's not quite in the Slope, but their thin pizzas are fantastic and the prices are very low. A pie, enough for 2 people is $10-$12.
Steinhoff happy hour is great - 2-for-one daily until seven. Even on weekends!!!
And don't forget about picnicking in the park - just give it a few more months! Get bagels, OJ, Cream cheese and a blanket, and you got yourself a nice brunch under $20! And no one needs to know that your OJ is 50% champagne

If you can afford $20 per person and like Asian food, you have many options as long as you avoid drinks and sushi. Whenever I order sushi (unless it's a lunch special) I always pay over $20 per person, bu many of the Thai, Chinese, and Asian fusion places on 5th and 7th avenue have entrees under $20.
Last night we went to Red Hot and spend $60 for 3 of us and it was very enjoyable (Red Hot is my fave Chinese place in the nabe, hubby still prefers Tofu, but I won)!
If you like Red Hot, you might like Hunan Delight on Union Street and 6th Avenue.
Check out www.menupages.com in advance if you're worried about prices.
It'd be nice that if during the recession more local restaurants offered "get a free meal when you buy one meal" nights. -
song is so inexpensive and i think its pretty fun.

Song is one of my fave delivery spots in the hood. Order pad thai and a mango salad is two meals for me for $11, $13 with tip. Not bad.
On weekends its almost impossible to get through without getting a busy signal for 45 minutes, though. -
This thread sucks..
Thanks. -

Ah Darlin, starting new job tomorrow and swearing off work-hour Brooklynianing. I'm going to miss you.
Thanks. -
Yeah, well, if you guys can praise or bash a resturant and a man/woman's livelihood, then I can sure as hell do the same to a bunch of lame opinions on a message board.
Anyway, rockingood, I think that 25 minutes every three or four days is plenty enough time to keep up on the whirlwind of information/entertainment that is sparcely peppered throught the brooklynian. -
12th St Bar & Grill: For $11.00 you can get a huge delicious burger topped with frizzled onions and served with your choice of cheddar, american, swiss or blue cheese and the best addictive fries. No take-out but you can order ahead and pick it up if you don't want to eat out thereby spending more money on liquor and dessert.
-
Will try 12th Street too, we never order dessert and since I want to be able to continue eating out in the actual restaurant, no more liquor. I will just bring a flask with me, LOL
-
How about this - take the free bus to IKEA and eat in their lovely cafe.
The swedish meatballs, gravlox, shimp salad, fries, salad and cofffee are
all delicious. They are open late. IT is also beautiful by the waterfront.
The food is extraordinarily CHEAP!!!!!!! -
LOL! I didn't think of that Diane! I do like the IKEA food and you are right, they have a great view!

I second 12th street. always consistent and affordable. -
Which reminds me - during the warm weather - The Fairway has a great
outdoor eating space. You can buy sandwiches, baked goods, etc
in their cafe area and eat out back looking at the Statue of Liberty. It is incredible. Their lobster Roll is outstanding. -

I'm gonna have to try this place. Thanks. -

Unrepentant Fenian wrote: I was wondering the same thing. Bonnie's has the best burgers in Brooklyn and their service has always been outstanding even at their busiest.
used to, maybe.....James and Bussaco absolutely leave their burger in the dust.

You guys missed the most obvious answer: Tacos Nuevo Mexico.
-
Another vote for Steinhof... they have EXCELLENT tomato soup (and it's like ~$3 AFAIK) you can easily get out of there for less than $30 spent on lunch for 2
and not sure if anyone mentioned, but IKEA... super double extra order of meatballs soaked with gravy and lingonberry preserves  -
Villa - ok, not great
Scallani - on 10th, very good, a little salty.
Hanco - rice vermicilli salad with extra pork!
Hunan Delight - had bad food from them once, hugged the toilet for three days.
Sun Luck - mala chicken, not bad
Yamato - spicy shrimp noodle, other stuff have elsewhere
Jpan - the elsewhere, all around good
Nana - light, be aware of rice bowls, huge quantities
Song - was good, now flip a coin
Ginza - bad benihana imitation, no chicken in fried rice
Kiku - ginormous rolls, surgically repaired jaw as proof.
Bonnie - juicy burgers, ask for extra napkins, and a mask for the smoke
Zuzu Ramen - expensive, please if you call the soda, ask the guy to open it, no fun losing your finger in the process
Fish camp - wife loves steamers, i'm ok with the lobster rolls. -
Mamacita wrote: Bonnies is still a good bet for dine-in cheap burgers and wings.
Man, I just went to Bonnie's yesterday for the first time since it changed ownwership (it did change ownership, didn't?) and it was different and not different in a good way.
IMO, the burger was not as substantial as I remember it and the wings looked smaller and greasier and the fries weren't curly. But at least the chipotle mayo was in a container on teh table so we didn't have to ask for more.
Not same as it ever was. -
The fries have never been curly. Are you sure you are thinking of the right place?
Burgers seemed the same to me as of last month and I've been eating there off and on since 2001.
I hope they didn't change ownership!

I wouldn't consider some of those places cheap! Especially not Fish Camp!

I swear they were one time, I know I'm delusional, so I'll factor that in. -

If you don't mind crossing Flatbush to officially enter PH then you will find Christie's. Home of the best bang for your buck in town. Delicious beef or chicken patty on fresh coco bread, for about $3. That will keep me full all day long. That's cheap but good.

Agreed. One of those patties and a big salad makes a decent dinner for 2. -
Definitely Los Politos II. Can do a couple easy combos, 1-2 soft tacos each + chips, or 1 taco each + shared burrito and/or chips are easy starters and will keep the bill low.
