food, shopping in the hood
Hello all-
I am glad to have found this board (found it through the Prospect Heights board). I am returning to Clinton Hill after being away for (gasp!) - 11 years. My husband and I are moving to Lefferts and Classon and are very excited about exploring all of the wonderful places in the neighborhood and those close by. To that end I put together a map of restaurants and shops based on things I could find on this board and generally out there on the web (go-brooklyn.com) was helpful, as was the set speed blog (http://ltjbukem.blogspot.com/).
Anyway, we are hoping to continue to build on this map when we finally move into the nabe (april 1) and get our feet on the ground. We also have plans to blog about the different locations. Its still a little rough around the edges, and I am trying to add to it and refine the categories etc. but I am wondering if y'all could provide information for things I am missing! I plan on covering Clinton Hill, Fort Green, Prospect Heights parts of Bed Stuy and Crown Heights, and will include some things in Park Slope as reccommended... Feel free to comment on the map itself or reply to this post with additional things I can add!
The map (in its ever evolving state) is here: http://www.communitywalk.com/map/2616
Thanks for the great resource all!

Subject: our neighborhood
Your new home is about 3 blocks from us. Welcome to our neighborhood.
For food, we use Fresh Direct deliveries.
On your map, you should add several things - I tried and was unsuccessful.
On Fulton near Clinton, you should add Olivino's Wine Shop and Sister's Hardware.
We use the dry cleaner on Franklin across from the Bedford Public Library, near the C subway station. He does a nicer job -- one time he carefully saved my gloves from the pockets of my coat, and removed and replaced the lapel pin without my even realizing that I'd left these things with the coat I put in for cleaning.
The library was recently renovated after a long time being closed. The promised re-opening date came and went, with no information until "God's Army" (whoever that might be) began putting up protest signs on the fence, which caught the eye of the New York Times City section and then information started to flow. The renovation is attractive and though it's quite small, it's very pleasant.
If you're doing your own renovation, you'll want to find the nearby Home Depot near Nostrand and Dekalb. Easy parking and big enough.
Our favorite restaurant in the neighborhood is Kush - walking distance. You have it on your map. Sammy and Abu are cook and Maitre D and they are very friendly. Food is excellent and inexpensive. We also like Vinnie and Olli for special occasions. -
what a great idea. i will try to contribute.

Subject: still working on it!
Thanks for the input - I am still working on the map, and have added your suggestions (and your comments on the dry cleaner - hope that is okay).
The map is set up now to accept comments on the community as a whole, and comments on the individual tags, but it doesn't allow people to add places - sorry it doesn't have that feature.
So if you have comments on a restaurant shop or other, please feel free to add them (my comments are weak at best - originally I was making it just for my husband and I, then I decided it was worth sharing). I will add more comments once we get out and about.
If you have additional places you would like added, please let me know!
Thanks for the input... -
If you are adding Home Depot, you must put on Sugarhill Restaurant and Supper Club right across the street on the corner of DeKalb and Nostrand. Its one of the few sit down Southern/Soul Food restaurants in the neighborhood and a staple for the Brooklyn business community. You can go in on weekdays and find local politicians having breakfast, bankers and ministers getting together for lunch, and old time regulars coming in for dinner.
The club/bar is downstairs and has been a part of the local community for the last thirty years. Its got the same vibe as Frank's on Fulton with three times the space. -
Outpost is great for coffee, its on Fulton near Claver. Joloff (african food) on the corner of St. James and Fulton is OK for an occasional bite, they have great ginger drinks. Tavern on Dean has a lively bar and decent food, always a great crowd. Bodegas used to be on the corner of Fulton and Clinton but I think they might be closed. We walk to the Park Slope food co-op because we can't afford Fresh Direct prices and cannot find any acceptable produce in this neighborhood.

Subject: updates
thank you all for your great feedback! we moved in on what felt like the first day of spring. we took breaks from all the moving to visit some of the wonderful cafes and shops in the area. I have updated the map with comments and photos. A huge thanks to AWD, Samantha and others who added comments! I keep adding things (although sometimes I have to take breaks to unpack) so please add comments and send me more ideas.
Also thank you for the CSA information, we were looking for one! -
Subject: csa
I just found this board off of the Clinton Hill CSA page. Just wanted to note in response to the previous post that, while I have not joined that CSA (am considering it, depends upon logistics for me), I was a member of the Park Slope one for two years, which partners with the same farm as Clinton Hill. The farm was absolutely excellent, great quality and variety--if the CSA format works for you, the farm is a good pick.
