Eastern Pkwy and Nostrand Discount Store Closed!

It was Mazon's (the other one- on Eastern Pkwy and Franklin- was demolished to make way for a condo building). As far as I know, I think they're going to re-do it??? But I'm not sure....
-
Its actually not the "other" one, its the same Mazon, insofar as the merchandise and all the employees from the Franklin/Eastern location simply up and moved to their new Nostrand location about a year or more ago... yes to make way for that silly condo (or is it rental apts. now?) building which has been not going up for some time now.

There was three- one on EP and Franklin, which is now gone. Then there's the one on EP and Nostrand- been there for at least 3 years. Then there's ANOTHER one down on Nostrand somewhere. Don't know about moving employees from store to store, when I say "other" I mean more than one store, same owner, multiple locations.
Regardless- still don't know what's going up in that Nostrand/ EP location. -
I heard the new owner of the building who Mazon was renting from broke the lease, so Mazon moved to Nostrand and Herkimer (down by Fulton st), much bigger and nicer store. Heard he might have furniture like the store on st marks.

I was in one of the stores on Nostrand last summer and the owner (manager?) was saying how business was very bad. I think that is why one of the Nostrand stores closed already.

Just to set the record straight - you may have noticed a significant buildout is going on at that space - major $$ being spent for a new commercial retailer the likes that Nostrand Avenue has not seen in some time. When it opens, it will add tremendously to the commercial vitality of the Avenue. Quite frankly, the Avenue did not need a saturation of 99cent stores with one on each corner. More interesting shops are coming - just you wait and see. The likes of the Union Street and Nostrand Ave establishments are more in the wings.

What kind of "commercial business" are we talking about? How do you know this information? -
Simple - I asked the construction guys what type of store they were building out one day when I walked by. I walk by daily, so perhaps they were being straightfoward in their response because they see me.
Otherwise, great sources on info are by going to the local Community Board meetings - there they often report on new businesses seeking licenses or permits or CB approvals if required.
For example, I know of a new fitness/training/dance center that will be opening soon along Nostrand Avenue. Exact location not yet annnounced, but that is what I heard. -
Fitness place?! Amazing! Great news. My winter hips can't wait!

I don't know anything about the big buildout being done for a commercial retailer at Eastern and Nostrand, but there is a big for rent sign there.
-
Evette, How can you miss the big plywood wall that is taking up half of the sidewalk? That crew that shows up there does projects for national retailers. Sit tight, you will see the store soon enough. As for the "For Rent Sign", there are other spaces in the building that are for rent - for example, the hair salon, Knapps, has moved to 854 Nostrand. Their old storefront is now for rent. As well, when you look upstairs at that building, they have renovated above the Avon store (Union St corner), and are trying to rent those spaces as well.

So the wraps are off of the mystery buildout on Nostrand and Eastern Parkway. T-Mobile...word has it that the chicken shack across the median just went out as well...can't wait to see how the game changes on that corner...likely to be another high pedestrian traffic-oriented retailer. Anyone want to place bets now on what it will be?
-
Word has it that Dunkin Donuts has staked out one corner and another mobile communication player has staked out the remaining corner. That just leaves the Banco Popular (formerly Kings County Savings Bank) to be repurposed....don't hold your breath on that!
-
David, which corner is going to be DD? I ask because I'll have to avoid walking past that one. I love me some bow-ties...
-
Believe it is to be the one where the pharmacy used to occupy (The Southeast corner)...but its not like walking across the street will help you avoid the smell of the crullers that they waft outside the store...talk about subliminal advertising!
