Russo's on 7th Avenue

Subject: Russo's on 7th Avenue

Recently there was a discussion on the Park Slope Parents Board about Russo's being dirty. I used to go there a lot because they have good cold cuts. But after some of the gross descriptions I was trying to decide are these people overly fussy, have things changed, or was I just oblivious to health violations?

  • zOMG I hate the PSP board they are teh sUXX0Rz!

Just kidding. I've never had any problems with the place but to be fair I don't go that often.
  • I've noticed that they are rude, but haven't really noticed them being any filthier than the usual for Park Slope.

Ever go into the bagel shop across from the Ansonia condos. Now, they are dirty. Usually grab your bagel from the bin with bare hands, the same hands that handle change, and other gross things I won't even mention. Good bagels though.

In general, I find hygene and cleanliness to be sorely lacking in most NYC establishments.
  • Never noticed dirt but rude rude rude. Not in a charming old-school way, either. Also found them to be kind of gougers -- regularly, if I'd ask for a 1/2 lb of soomething they'd give me close to 3/4 (not just once or twice) and would give me the nastiest look if I said it was too much.

Much prefer Pollio or A&S on 5th Ave.
  • I've never had a problem with Russo's, although lately I've been more into A&S, which is also closer and has the advantage of being a real butcher shop as well as a salumeria. I mostly tend to stop by Russo's when I'm on my way home from Bagel Hole.

    Where is A&S?

5th Avenue, and I forgot which cross street (much closer to Flatbush than Russo's).

I agree with everything you wrote. Somehow I find it easier to ignore the poor hygiene at the Bagel Hole than the bad manners at Russo's.

these guys are just the way they are --- once they get to know you --- they treat you amazingly well. just think of them as the cranky uncles that may grunt out replies to your questions, but slip you twenty bucks for ice-cream when no one is looking. their sauces, meatballs, sandwiches, mashed potatoes, etc... EVERYTHING is really tasty and of GREAT quality.

I have never had a problem with their reputed rudeness (although I know the old guy used to put his finger on the scale and my neighbor finally confronted him and told the old geezer to get his god damned finger off the scale. two weeks later, never saw the old guy again.). I do think they have excellent cold cuts--really good soprassata and salami.
