Is it worth it?

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
I've lived in Jersey City for 8 years and want to move. I am looking at an apartment on Butler Place. It looks great, but after reading all the "crime" related posts here, I'm now hesitant and wonder if I should suck it up and look in Park Slope, which seems very safe to me at night.

I'm street smart, but weary. JC is already a place where I have to watch my back when I walk home at night, worry about being burglarized, and get harrassed regularly in the summertime, but I know JC, know where to walk and know that as long as I'm not coming home crazy late, I'm ok walking home from the PATH train. But from reading the posts here, PH sounds worse than JC. Is it, or is the information just so concentrated on this board?

Is Butler place reasonably safe? How safe do the women feel walking home from Grand Army Plaza at night (as late at 1am?)?

Thanks. Hope you can help, I might be your new neighbor! :-)

uh. most of the apartment buildings btwn GAP 2/3 and butler pl. are doorman buildings. there are places you can go/scream if something bad happens. that said, I'd say butler is one of the safer blocks in the nabe. and by safer, I mean pretty damn safe.

Cool. Thanks. I know nothing about Prospect Heights and did not know that most of the places had doormen.

bro jersey city is much more dangerous :p from my experince hehe. parts of ph is much safer. just walk around the area and you'll see what i mean. you know that part of jc that has all the brownstones and stuff, well thats what ph is like, except for parts that has huge apartment buildings and north east industrial area. other than that its very safe :p.
  • Yeah, my ex-bf lived in JC and I'd pick PH anyday. Just don't wander around at night spaced-out with your iPod on, you know?

I'm going to walk around today to see. I was fine until I read the crime posts here! :-) Thanks for your input!
  • We live right around the corner from there. It is completely safe. The block is essentially run by a bunch of Albanian doormen/supers. No problems.
  • you know the borders of ph right? my taking it as from flatbush to the left, washington ave to the right and atlantic to the north and eastern parkway to the south. when you do, do the walk just walk around each and every block. area near washington ave is still being Gentrified.

That block is pretty upmarket, safest of the safe, more Park Slope than many parts of Park Slope. If you're looking at the condos on the market, #20-#34, they're pretty nice; maybe the danger is overpaying not crime. They've been on the market for months now. Market has been very slow and not rising since last summer; too few buyers for too many new condos. $600/sqft would be a good price.

I'd be renting, and the rent is at a reasonable price, far better than Park Slope. Glad to hear it's a safe block.

Great. It's a top location to rent, all the advantages of North Slope just without the name and price. Under 5% p.a. to rent is good for renter (~$2.50/sqft/month @ Butler Pl.?).
  • I live on Butler Place and have lived here for close to seven years. None of the buildings on Butler Place have full time 'stand in the door' doormen. Though many do have live-in supers. The doormen are all on Plaza. It is a very safe block, but I still watch where I am going after dark (I am a woman and I like to go out and enjoy a few cocktails at night). Because it is a residential neighborhood there is not alot of street/foot traffic late at night so you need to be smart and aware.

And I would never live any place else! I love this block! it is quiet, kids play ball in the street....

    Love it!
  • I just got back from hanging out over there, walking around. It's completely fine, it's not like Jersey City at all. Cool, now I'm excited again! Thanks for all of your input!:-)

    I love hearing that! Excellent!

i would say the brownstones near or close to hamilton park is almost like ph :p. i have no idea what that area in jc is called. but its only place i like hehe.
  • I am new to Butler as well and it is very safe right here. From the GAP station, Plaza St all has doormen, and from the B/Q stop on 7th you can walk down Flatbush which is always well lit and it's a quick walk on Sterling to get here.
