kombit
Just wanted to put in a good word for Kombit -- the haitian rest. on Flatbush. We ate dinner from there last night and really enjoyed it -- if you like Haitain food of course.
The women that run the place are absolutely the loveliest. I don't typically write such endorsements, but I'd love to see these women make it. It so rare to get friendly, smiling service in NY. It felt like we were eating with good friends.
The resturant looks a bit daunting from the street -- dark and outdated -- but its really worth a try.

Subject: Eat at Kombit ...
I'm really glad to see this post. I absolutely feel the same way about Kombit. The food is great, and, as you said, the women who run it are so, so nice. I too wish more people would discover it ... as I do fear that they may not have enough business to keep them going (not that I have any insider info on that, it just is a concern). -
I haven't been there yet myself, but I had leftovers from when my wife went with a friend and I thought it was great. I'm looking forward to actually going to the place. You can't find this kind of food in most neighborhoods and we're lucky to have it.

do they have any vegetarian options?
-
I am going to definitely check it out. I am guilty of going to the same places (Beast, Tavern on Dean, Tom's, The Usual, SODA). I need to branch out!
Any specialties I should try? Or is it all good? -
Yes, they have a great vegetarian dish (but I can't remember the name), but I think it's just called "des legumes" or something like that. Their plantains are quite different from any others you might have had as well.

My girlfirend and I had likely the worst experience ever at any restaurant in Brooklyn there. Our food was literally inedible and I'm not talking about a matter of preference or opinion...it was a disaster. We never went back, but, perhaps they've changed?
-
daveb, I saw your comment about that before... that's really puzzling, because they almost without exception get high marks - as you saw in the NYT review:
http://www.dailyheights.com/archives/2005/01/conch_stew_cure.html
I haven't been to Kombit, but I DID eat there immediately before it was Kombit and it was an absolute disaster - so bad that every time I pass Kombit I think about the terrible experience I had.
Is it possible you ate there BEFORE it was Kombit? The place only changed hands recently. -
I'm aware of the NYT review and you're right, I find it very confusing. It was definitely Kombit, not too long after it opened. Seriously, it was traumatic. I guess they must have either changed chefs or something because they're still open and no one has anything bad to say about them, I don't know. I do know that there's no way my girlfriend would ever go back there. The waitstaff was semi-apologetic and seemed to understand that it was bad too.

how much does dinner cost roughly? I might go try it out, but it doesn't look too inviting. It reminds me of a fancy JRG cafe.

Well, first we ordered some kind of fried appetizer, filled with corn/cheese/something - honestly I can't remember. It was one of those heat n' serve appetizers you can buy in bulk and parts were still cold from the freezer. That was the appetizer.
I ordered some kind of goat dish. It tasted like they waited till the goat died off old age before they cooked it. Tough doesn't describe it. Galvenized rubber comes closer. Unseasoned, charred and served with a bland tomato based sauce to dip in.
My girlfriend ordered some kind of vegetable dish (this was when the place first opened, like what...a year ago or something close so the memory isn't really crystal clear) and the vegetables were the frozen, pre-chopped variety, with the carrots in the ridged, potato chip shape you'll likely recall from cafeteria days and prison).
Lastly, my beer was warm and the glass was dirty. I mean, it was ridiculous how bad it was. I hear nothing but good things now and I think back to that afternoon there and I'm like seriously?
But, in all fairness, that was one experience, quite a while ago. I'm sure that the place has changed or what I ate was an isolated experience considering the positive things people have to say about Kombit. I don't mean to harsh on it. -
Subject: En Francais
Well, just one more small tidbit about Kombit. If you've taken a few semesters of French in high school or college and think you are up to conversing (ha!) ... you might find a place where you can babble-on (dude  ) in your non-native tongue and you will possibly be treated with a reasonable level of respect (even though, of course, you don't deserve it) and you might EVEN be given a few pointers. How's that? I think that's ... hmmm ... well ... awesome ...
(dudette refrains from using too many emoticons) ... -
I actually do speak French, dudette. I grew up with it. 8)
Understandably, it's still not bringing me back. But, whatever... last I checked it was okay to not be so hot about a restaurant. I'm okay with it, at least. I'm not discouraging anyone from going. If people like it, go for it. I just had a bad time, whatever. Lots of people seem to like it.
...not deserving of respect...OH NOES.

Kombit has been open for much longer than 1 year. are you sure we're talking about the same place. i mean it sounds like you are, but Kombit has been around longer. -
Yeah, it was.
Listen, don't worry about it. The sky won't fall because my grumpy ass had a bad time there. Enjoy!
