Corner of 21st and 6th

edited November -1 in Brooklyn Back When
Hello all. This is my first time to this page. My name is Arnold DeSena and I left the old neighborhood kicking and screaming a long time ago. My mother is Jennette Lagreca. I have a couple of really great cousins who I see on this page, Ralph Marsella and the lovely and talented Cousin Franni other wise know as FAYSTAR.
Gotta say that you can pull a kid out of Brooklyn but you can't pull Brooklyn out of the kid. My family moved us to Connecticut is '75 and long story short I now live in Columbus, Ohio. I have moved around some since '75 and no matter where I go when people ask where are you from I always tell them Brooklyn. They very quickly catch on as to what that means. I am sure I have lost that pure edge that can only be sharp if you stay in Brooklyn but I am still the one who stands out and most definitely here in the Mid-West. What is the best part though is that there are many people here from Brooklyn (small world).

I hope this does not sound like a Readers Digest story...hope to hear from anyone who might remember me.

Just spoke to my mom. Do you want to know how well my mom knew the LaGreca's...(if they are the same ones, lol) What may be your grandparents, actually lived in the home I and my mom was raised in on 21st street. They lived on the first floor of our building, with mom and my grandmother living on the top floor, and my Aunt Sophie and Uncle Joe (Guarrasi) living on the middle floor. BTW the building is still there. (Check out googles map area, punch in 135 21 st Bklyn NY, then click the "Sattlelight"image
Then, she said, your grandparents had children named, Rose, Angie, Mary, Josie, Paulie, Joey, Frankie, and Angelo.
Mom always spoke so kindly of your grandparents, because she remembers themimagemaking Pasta Padano and always brings a hot dish over to my mom's house, and as she says, always gave mom a little extra which made her feel so good. She says they were wonderful people, and she wants me to ask you if you had an Uncle named Joey who used to own the bar on 4th ave and 36th street?

  • I do believe you have the right family. My mother spoke about living on 21st between 4th and 5th. My Aunts were Rosie and Marie and my Uncles were John, Jerry and Frankie and my mother (the baby) is Jeanette. My Grandfather was Joe and my grandmother was Fannie. They eventuallymoved far away...up to 6th Ave. between 21st and 22nd across from the lab. When my mother got married my parents moved up on 21st between 6th and 7th just down from Greenwood. I was raised in 335 21st.
I went to St. Johns right into 8th grade before we moved to CT. My mother got me to check out this page she went to the reunion last month. She had a blast.

    Hi Arnonld,
...small world as they say...how about the bar on 36th and 4th? Was that your uncles bar? Mom wants to know.

    Hi Arnold,image
  • The bar on 36th and 4th ave was called the Chat-a-Way. Before it closed the guy who ran it was Paulie. He and his sister Mary cooked the greatest Italian sea food. I lived on 36th street in 74.

Wow, just tonight I was talking about your Mom with Aunt Jeanette.
She was the most fun ever. God rest her soul.
Hope to see you at the reunion!
  • I can't believe that there are only a few postings for 21st and sixth with all the kids that grew up or hung out on that block. The candy store was the place to buy your egg creams, baseball cards and nice ice cold cokes from that icey water Coca Cola chest. I have several pictures of the kids on our bikes and when our families would take us to Valley Stream. I wish I could post for all to see but if you email me I'll send them to you. Ralphie & Joey Marcella, Sally Latina, Anthony Mei, Joey Ciapetta jr and sr and more.
  • hey joesid, i hung out on 6th ave & 20st next to the three star & in front of harrys candy store. i know your cousins fran & laura and your aunt rosie is joanie red's best friend. do you know buddy williams and michele monteforte and her cousin james? we all hung out together on 6th ave.
