really? have you never been to dixon's on union b/w 6th and 7th? they are some really nice, friendly, unobnoxious, people. their prices are reasonable, they are down to earth and very helpful. if you have never been there you should check it out. way better than that snob show that is the place on 5th ave.

They (Dixon's) are excellent for bike repairs, and for the sale of accessories. But many years ago my wife and I bought bikes there, and only much later did I realize that the sizes of the bikes were completely wrong for us. Dixon's sold us what they happened to have in stock, rather than ordering bikes that would have fit us better.

I would not buy another bike there.

Yes, I thought the article was pretty funny. There are definitely other bike shops around, but there’s no place that fits the needs of most cyclists,” Carter said."

I think it's funny that they can describe themselves as being marketed towards a "niche" and then describe that "niche" as most cyclists. That just isn't my understanding of what the word "niche" means.

I'm excited for a new bike store! The one on 7th and 11th sucks, and they are rude. Dixon's has absolutly nothing and from my very brief experiences there, they know very little (very brief experience though). R&A has AWESOME bikes and THE WORST sales people. I went there ready to drop 4 grand and they wouldn't even give me the time of day.

Personally, I like SBR in Columbus circle (they sponsor me!). Even before I got sponsored I used to go all the way up there, but it's a hike. Also, there's a great one out in Bay Ridge, Verazano bikes. Also a hike but the bikes are a little less expensive and they know their stuff (but they don't sponsor me ;-) )

I second the idea of opening sales! More Bikes!!

Well said- I have the exact same feelings about the current bike shops in the area. I hope that this place will have opening sales too, I'm getting ready for a new road bike soon. I've heard great things about SBR, but haven't been yet.

This was supposed to open today. Has anyone had a chance to go by there yet? I'm at work, but I might swing by around 6P. Hopefully they're having some deals.

Went by today, its pretty sparse so far but its a nice space and the guy working the counter (who I think is an owner) was super nice.

The bf stopped in Brooklyn Bicycle shop Saturday. He said the stock was limited but they were really friendly and seemed to be aiming for the casual cycling crew (hybrids, not serious racing) but I'm guessing what customers want will really dictate what they do.

Sunday as we walked past I noticed it was packed, so folks are checking it out.

On a side note, the bf ended up at Mr. Cycles way south on 7th Ave. They had all the bikes he wanted to try in stock and he was really happy with the service. Plus, it seems that they rent bikes in case anyone is interested.

My husband bought a bike there this past weekend, and I bought a couple of little things for my bike...super nice guys. And they were very busy which is always good - esp in a recession.
