Rooftop Gardens

I was wondering if anyone out there has or wants to have a rooftop garden?

  • It's a dream of mine . . .

the Botanic Garden mentioned the Green Blocks in a newsletter last year. I kept the link . . .

  • i always dream of doing a roof garden :(. but my roof is on a slope. stuff will slide right off.
  • I just want a garden in my backyard :) I knew exactly what I wanted when we renovated the inside but I look in my yard and its a blank slate. I wish I knew some student landscaper who would want to make my yard their project for minimal $$. I just don't know what types of flowers to plant, what grows well in sun etc.

;) i'll do it for cost of plants :p. ie hehe i'll buy for you and myself :D. i know what i want lol just my yard isnt ready yet hehe.
  • I wanted to start up a group of people here in Brooklyn who wanted to have rooftop gardens (novices like myself and seasoned gardeners). Does anyone know of any people out there who already have rooftop gardens?
  • if you gonna do your own garden and stuff. get stuff with low maintence hehe and hardy that will surive the cold winters here. we are zone 6 for plants. ps its cheaper to order stuff online than get them from home depot and such. for example. my whole garden and yard probably gonna cost about 100 or so dollars to outfit doing online shopping :p. i already pick out all the plants for myself already. just waiting for my contractor to finish. blah probably be out of season when he is done :(.
  • yeah, i guess the place to start is with my landlord. I should make sure he's cool with it - he seems the type that would be. So, once I do that it's all about getting the supplies- where online would you go?

i'm a political organizer and once I get my garden started, the idea would be to start and organization that would allow others to do so.

Is this an ok time of year to start planting?

I have a newly constructed roof deck and I'm very interested in getting a "garden" started up there. I need to keep it as light weight as possible so it will mostly be potted herbs and vegetables. I'm also going to give grapes a try. I ordered everything online already except for the pots and soil. I'll probably do that this weekend. Do you guys know if there's a vendor that sells pots at the GAP green market?

The BBG has the mother of all plant sales the first week of May
    www.BBG.org

and they have good plants/seeds/pots at their gift store year round. Reasonable prices, quality plants, and the $$ goes to the garden.

Better watch it Armchair I just might take you up on that but if you are serious PM me and we can arrange it.
  • 311 to the Dept of Buildings would probably help in terms of arranging an inspection to determine weight limits, or at least getting whatever the city says.

Remember that you'll have significant wind issues, so some flowers are not a great idea. Lighter weight pots, etc should get strapped down somehow.
  • We've had a rooftop garden for the last 3 years and it's amazing. It's our own personal getaway (and living in a small studio, we need it!). We started off with basic herbs and a few tomato plants and have graduated to herbal tea plants, a variety of tomatoes and pepper plants, herbs, beans... I tend to be an over achiever. The key is having enough shade in a day for the more sensitive plants.
  • Speaking of rooftop gardens. Not like sketchy surprises are new for Ratner but does that huge chunk of parkland in this layout seem out of place to anyone else?

...like that's exactly where his stadium sits but it's not an oval, stadium-shaped park and there's no differentiation between ground level and the private stadium rooftop garden.
I mean, there's a friggin path that goes through the stadium and ponds!
