The Tale of Cyrano (was: what kind of dog is this?)
Hi there.
In love with a puppy recently rescued (with mama + rest of litter) from a city shelter, making plans for bringing it home very soon.
Just out of curiosity, any idea what kind of dog it might be?
Here's a pic of him a few weeks ago at 4.5 weeks:

Here's a closer look at his mama:

So, any ideas what sort of dog might be in there, at least from the mama side?
Thanks!

OMG! I don't know what he is...except adorable...yay!!!

Were the gums and tongue all pink or marked with black/purple on pups or mom? The pups wrinkly face kind of looks like there could be some shar pei (they and chows and another, maybe akita have dark tongues). It's face also kind of looks like it could have some boxer in there. Momma's small ears also kind look like those of a shar pei mix, but this is all a guess from a picture

Is the momma possibly a ridgeback mix?
Very cute, healthy looking pup! -
Thanks Flexi, we're psyched.
OQ, hmmm...I will have to find out re: the tongue/gums, cahhnt remembahhh. You might be on to something regarding the Ridgeback look in the mama.
Looking at the other pups in the litter, I am almost wondering if the papa might have been a pit bull.
Have a look at a few of the others:

puppies!
Congratulations on your new behbeh. They're all adorable.
What about a name? -
Definite resemble to the pits, though lots of dogs look really similar at that age.

And look at some ridgeback puppy pics!
-
OQ - Yep, they do all kinda look alike before they grow into themselves, hah. Color me even more confused. :colors:
Flexi - we have had some fun coming up with a list of names with the kids and will probably have it narrowed down over the next few days.
Here are some amusing ones the kids (6yos) came up with:
(the less probable ones...saving the more likely ones for later post)
Diego
Bolt
Raoul
Zimm
Lalo
Ginofy (erm, wha...?)
Paoia (pronounced "pah-wha")
Total crackups, those two. -
See "rant and rave" in the lounge for my suggested names for Carmen's new puppeh
I like Raoul.....Not so much Ginofy
-
the mom looks like a dog from the islands..... i don't remember what they call them though!
-
Yeah, Raoul has a bizarre combo of mysterious, exotic charm and sheer, howl-at-the-moon onomatopoiea to it, totally funny on a dog.
( RAAAAAOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUULLL! )
As for Ginofy, that one's a throw-away. We are at a complete loss as to where that even came from, but it was amusing to note nonetheless.

Omg...this is a cross between my two dogs! Definitely a lot of Staffordshire Bull Terrier and a little American Pit Bull Terrier and Lab on the mama's side. I'm so dang sure of this that I want one of those puppies for myself!
In terms of general disposition, you couldn't choose better! My Staffie is a lazy, cuddly, snoring piece of furniture (mama's boy) and my AMPT/Lab mix is a crazy, hyperactive bundle of bejesus (daddy's boy). Neither are the least bit human/pet aggressive.
Those are the CUTEST puppies ever. I'm SO jealous. -

And jeffrey, wait until I post the pix of your mama. -
make sure to post your puppeh on www.dailypuppy.com and let us know when raoul become a star
-
omiGOD, congratulations jeffrey!
Totally cute - any chance you can take two? Dogs are sooooooo happy to stay with a sibling...
who's doing the nice puppy photography?
I'm seeing the ridgeback mix or something in that large hound family -- I'd bet totally *not* sharpei or chow
-
UrbanCowgirl - hah, well whaddya know...I can totally see that being in the mix too, especially based on the stance/posture and overall build of some of the siblings. So who knows. The mama is a total sweetheart, btw.
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
It's funny you mention the mama's boy / daddy's boy doggie dichotomy in your home, as the one we've selected at top above is a docile sweetheart but I'm also very drawn to the other "crazy, hyperactive bundle of bejesus" that is the first pup pic in the rest of the litter pics I posted above (who himself utterly melts into docility when in my arms, btw...I have odd dog-whispery superpowers that way, lol).
Raw - hah, that nearly made me snarf my coffee.
Pitu - There's a solution, why choose...just take the 2 of 'em.
Dunno if we could do that in reality, tho. -
I promise, either will make you so happy! Our boys are amazing. You can see a bit of the resemblance in this pic (though, Parker, the black Staffie has gained more weight recently). And you can see Charlie's face full-on in the last one (he was adopted to us as a 'lab mix', but he's obviously got some bully in there).

Regarding the above 3 pics:
1) Stare upward, receive bacon
2) If you think that's big, just wait to see the hole it goes into
3) Drinkin' buddies -
Get them both!! It will save you time in entertaining one yourself, plus you get the pleasure of seeing them be playful.

Oh man, between rolling around and bonding with the pups with their rescue foster family in recent days and listening to all of the great feedback from all of you here I must admit we are very seriously considering the idea of bringing two of them home, as instant buddies. (just add water and kibble)
Aw heck, guess we do everything in twos (our 6yo kids are twins), don't know any better.
No promises, but we'll definitely mull it over and report back here.
Oh, and pitu...the photos were taken by the [extremely loving, you can tell from adoration implicit in photos] foster family that rescued them, whose sole requirement is that they get a photo card every year after they come home with families. Hee.
Wow, is this a booster-shot of happy-happy joy-joy or what? Doctor shoulda prescribed this years ago.

Two puppies are more than twice the work! You need to have time to train them both separately and together. Most of the trainers I known strongly discourag people from getting two puppies at once unless the adopters know a lot about dog training and are pretty much always home. There are tons of dogs in Brooklyn so a lone pup can be socialized and have play time pretty easily if you go to the parks. But I have no idea of your dog experience so maybe you're ready for the challenge

Whatever you get, we expect pictures!
On the shar pei thing, these just kind of remind me of my folks' dog, who doesn't look like a shar pei but most definitely has a good amount of shar pei in her. The pup's wrinkly face made me wonder. I've seen lots of half shar pei pups and they all look different.
This is my folks' dog smiling, which she's done since she was a puppy. She's very happy but looks scary!

Opossum, that dog (your parents', as pictured) is not a sharpei mix, just like that dog is not a cat.

Not trying to start a fight, just going against some misinformation that seems to be out there . . . a peculiar phenomenon among some rescues where they call any dog with a wrinkled forehead a shar pei mix, and they're *just not*.
LOTS of dogs have a wrinkly forehead - with pei, it's the very peculiar shape of the muzzle, the shape of the body, the carriage, the hocks, and a sort of tip toe thing with the paws. And of course the mass of extra skin on the puppies and some adults, although that doesn't seem to carry over much outside a purebred.
I've seen a few of those actual pei mixes myself (usually totally fuggly, although there's a really cute brown one in Park Slope) and there's always something that tips it off to someone that really knows the breed (I do.) I have a family member who shows dogs and does pei rescue - and we were just having this conversation this weekend, after she was called to pick up yet another "shar pei mix" -- she got to tthe door...pitty beast pops out... "where's the shar pei?" she asks...
Those not-pei dogs are often of the pit mix/Staffordshire Terrier variety. The morphology is really different, although you're right about a solid black tongue indicating pei/chow - but plenty of other breeds can have black spotted tongues.
Cute bunch of photos of dogs sticking out their tongues here.
And omigod, there's a shar-pei puppies blog....cuuuuuute! -
The puppies look like they've got a bit of boxer in them - but that could be any bully breed really. I'll have to find Oscar's baby picture to compare.

No this girl is def. shar pei mix. And like any mix, they may only share very few traits with a particular parent. I've seen the pups of a shar pei mom that hardly looked like her at all (worked at a huge shelter where we got lots of litters with moms). The rescue this girl came from said she was a GSD--HA! Even as a puppy she looked nothing like a GSD. She's got the tongue/gum tongue purple and you can pull her chest and neck skin up around her face so that she looks almost exactly like a shar pei and her coat is like the shar pei's I've known. Plus nothing resembling any of the other colored tongue dogs in looks or behavior. We're thinking she might have anatolian and pit in there due to personality and extreme jaw strength and killing ability. SP is the only breed the their vets can agree she's got.
Really, I don't think she's a dog. She smarter than any dog I've ever met (but very independent) and looks really odd in person. Smart in ways that scare you when you know she has an attitude and weighs almost as much as you. She can happily survive on her own (which she does sometime of her own choice) but loves people, esp. little girls. Weird dog.
My dog is a BC/GSD mix and lots of folks argue with me about his mix in the park. It's funny to me b/c my dad new the parents and it was a planned litter. The litter just looks very little like their parents. It's an awesome mix, btw! I want the folks he came from to have another litter so I can get him a little sister.
There's no real way to know the breeds in a mix unless the parents are known, but guessing is entertaining.
Okay, I really need to stop putting off work
-
looks like a rhodesian ridgeback mix. prob mixed with pit/boxer
mom is quite a looker.
judging from the littermates i'm going to say she had a thing for pitbulls!
either way, you're going to have a big, rambunctious beast. congratulations!
i'd love to meet it once it's adjusted to it's new life.
i've got a cranky 17 y/o at home and could use some puppy therapy.

Those puppies are so cute! Where are you getting them from? is this an adoption from a shelter? Good luck!
-
WHATEVER KIND OF DOG IT IS, BE CAREFUL BECAUSE THE MOTHERS
PICTURES SHOWS THAT IT'S NOT BEENING CARE FOR. THE NAILS
ARE MUCH TOO LONG. lOOKS LIKE IT'S BEEN CAGED (NO EXERCISE).
VERY CUTE DOGGY. -
LTS - Mama and newborn pups were recently rescued from a city shelter by a foster family that is helping them find good homes (but they are keeping the mama). Thanks!
Fancy - Thanks for your thoughts, all input appreciated. You might have a point about the nails being a bit long in that particular picture there, but if I remember correctly that picture may have been from when they first brought them home from the shelter. As for the physical condition of the mama, it's worth noting that she and the pups were only just recently rescued so I don't know where she was before, but I do know that she and the pups have a nice backyard area and driveway to play in at the foster house, that they have all had extensive check-ups with and care by a licensed vet and that the mama is walked regularly in her new home.
That's the thing about rescue dogs, I guess...ya just need to take them in however they may be an' lurrrv 'em back up to health and happiness.
Sign me up.

Yay! Jeffrey, you just made my day. I know this is weird, but I was thinking about this thread as I walked into work this morning. Specifically, how I was so worried that all of those super cute little puppies would be adopted but that no one would want mama. The concerned look on her face in the picture you posted just got me in the gut.
-
OMG I want those puppies in my arms right now!!!!!
How big is the mama? The colors of the puppies kind of made me think mastiff with the darker face and wrinkles and jowls.
Adorable. -
The mama is about the size of a lab or ridgeback and as sweet as can be.
Yeah, rolling around with all of the pups on Sunday was really something.
Le sigh.
Howdy, Stranger!
