Safety of neigborhood???
Dear Brooklynians, i am renting an apartment in prospect heights in the summer, it is one of those apartments converted from a hospital. I have no idea if it is safe around there? Does anyone know the neighborhood, what kind of crowd live around there and how safe is it? Please get back to me asap! Thanks guys!

hey. that's where i live.
i feel fine, safety-wise. i ride the shuttle rather than walk down franklin at night, although i know plenty of people think that the walk is safer than the ride. i am a small woman, and i have never felt seriously threatened here. (in fairness, i am usually not alone walking at night and am only rarely out past 11 or 12.)
people have been at pains to say that the hospital is really in crown heights, although others are at pains to say it is not. whatever. (i'll stick with "crow hill") i think the few blocks around here feel better than some that are squarely in prospect heights. -
only thing i gotta say is its not prospect heights

I live down the block from you... yeah, it's fairly safe. Just keep your head about you when you're out and about.

don't worry earthbound... it's all good.. i live a block away from there and it is pretty quiet and safe. i agree about taking the train at night instead of walking plus its an added convenience....

I live on Park Place one block south of the hospital.
Crown Heights is as safe as any other nabe in New York can be, East New York and Flatbush aside. That's to say, keep your wits about you. Put away your walkman/iPod/music device when walking about the area.
But what I want to know is why are you asking now? A question like that needs an answer before you sign a lease to an shittily constructed, overpriced pad. -
I've lived in the J-Hospital since 2004, and have never had any problems with the neighborhood.
Sadly, you're probably better off on the street than inside the building. -
Ive also live in the j hospital since 2004. There are definately a lot of cool people walking around the area - where the hell do they go???
I'd really like to throw a party for everyone in the neighborhood. NYBT, you down?? -

Ah yes! Anyone know who to talk to to get permits?
Edit: I just emailed community board 8 about it. -
Never gotten one, but I believe you have to get it from the community board and then have it approved by the precinct.
Anyone on the board done this before?? -
You're on the right track by contacting the CB. You can also get your local politians involve to donate money, help or whatever then can do. ie: Mayors office, District Attorney's office, Borough President's office and more.
