Postal Woes — Brooklynian

Postal Woes

We live in 11205 and are serviced by the USPS station on Myrtle.

For the past 6 months (and more) the postal worker never puts the mail in the mailbox. We live in a browstone and the postal worker has the keys to the main door and hence full access to the mailbox.

However may be once in a fortnight will we have our mail in our box. There are only three apartments in the entire house.

Most days the mail is just thrown on the floor. I can understand if it was once in a while when they had a temp postal worker. But this is the norm.

I checked with my landlady and she noticed the same too. However she has not changed any access keys to the mailbox and for sure the postal workers have the keys otherwise we would have that rare instance of mail being in the correct place.

Frankly the mail service has been going to the dogs year over year.

Mail is mutilated most times. Front covers of magazines have tears and the few times the postal worker tries to put mail in the box, they decide to shove every single piece inside as a result its practically impossible to open the mailbox.

Is there a place one can address these issue to? And can one do it anonymously ? I dont want my postal worker taking vendetta on me for complaining about slipshod service.

  • Ugh. I hate that post office with a passion.

Periodically over the years the manager has responded to inquiries and complaints. Theoretically our US Rep. Ed Towns is the one who can do something about it. Good luck with that. Anyway, here's a thread you might find useful. There was another one a while back too but I'm having trouble finding it.

  • My suggestion: Write an old fashioned letter (not a phone call or e-mail) and complain to the station supervisor, and cc. the Postmaster General, Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and your US Representative. Certifying the letters would be a good idea. In my experience, letters are usually effective at getting what you want. Most government agencies have to follow a strict protocol in dealing with letters, which inevitably require a formal response. Phone calls and e-mails can be ignored.
  • Well, I recently had MAJOR mail issues with the 11216 office. You think your mail being put in a pile of the floor is bad? Alot of times my mail wouldn't even come. I could go on and on but I'll leave it at this: our mail service blew. I ended up calling the post office and speaking with the manager. I was very nice about it (it was hard, but you always get more flies with honey than with vinegar), explained the situation, and our mail carrier actually called me back personally. The problems were improved immediately and service was never better. I suggest you go to usps.com and find the phone number to your office and try that route. I was actually taken aback by the fact that there was some level of accountability with my post office.
  • I live in the same zip, and I recently was home when the mail carrier delivered mail. I had a package show up as delivered 45 minutes before he was ever on the street. The package never arrived here. And they have not been at all helpful at all in finding out what happened to it. I called that day. It could not have been that hard for the carrier to remember where he delivered the package (I had an exact description and it was in a distinct box). They said it was likely misdelivered, but I have not had any help in trying to track it down after calling and emailing USPS even.

We have this same issue! The carrier has taken to just shoving stuff in there so it's bent and smashed as well. Magazines are always torn and sometimes they don't show at all.

Our problems have just started after several years. I attributed it to a new carrier or supervisor or something. It has been really frustrating.
  • I remember hearing once that the 11205 Myrtle Ave PO is a 'training' post office, hence the rotating roster of mailmen, and the terrible job they do.
