Acer Mini Notebook - likes/dislikes? — Brooklynian

Acer Mini Notebook - likes/dislikes?

Does anyone have experience with the Acer Mini Notebook. Here's one that's incredibly cheap:
http://www.fadfusion.com/selection.php?product_item_number=10044400042

I only really need it for reading emails, surfing the web and very rarely a Word or Excel document. How fast (or slow) would this computer run and/or what should be the minimum RAM I should get? Does anyone have suggestions for other inexpensive notebooks/laptops?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

that should be just fine for what you describe your needs to be
only thing you should do is look at getting one with a minimum of one gig of memory
you can buy the same model if not nearly the same with 1 gig I believe from J&R
  • I will say - I have a crappy work pc with an archaic processor and 384 mb ram and am able to run Win XP, Office (usually Outlook and Word open together, sometimes Excel too) and a web browser (with lots of tabs). I don't love it, but it works, so the 512 will likely work for your limited computing purposes and lighter OS. That said, when it comes to RAM more is definitely better, so if you can afford the gig, get it.
  • Thanks, everyone. I have a work laptop at home for any "heavy lifting".

People have been scaring the bejesus out of me, lately, that my company is probably monitoring my computer use at home so I just want to get something on the side for personal emails (and posting to Brooklynian!) without Big Brother looking over my shoulder.
    ;-)
  • By coincidence, I just had an Acer netbook delivered to me yesterday. It's a sweet little machine. I bought the most expensive one in the line at tigerdirect. It has 1G of RAM but more importantly to me almost 7 hours of battery life. It's perfect for my computing needs since my husband has the monster desktop at home. One caveat about the netbook. The keyboard is small, which works for me since I have small hands. but, if you have meathooks for hands, it may be frustrating.
  • i have a dell mini and i love it. it's also my secondary pc so i use it mainly for internet access. my only problem is the small keyboard and touchpad but you get used to it.

dell runs 20% off refurb specials pretty regularly that could probably save you 50-100 off that setup (mine was around that price and came with xp, twice the memory, and twice the hard drive space). check http://mydellmini.com/forum/ or techbargains.com for 20% off codes.

the battery lasts a little longer too, i get about 3 1/2 to 4 hours (the one you linked has the 3 cell battery, i assume apresvu's has the 6 cell, the standard mini has 4 cell).
  • Thanks, apresvu and username - I will research! What do both/either of you pay for wifi?
  • I'm thinking of getting one, too. So far TigerDirect.com seems to have the best prices.
  • Just got my Acer Aspire One today. I loves it already. It's adorable. Haven't hooked it up to the internet yet, will do that when I get home.
  • I love my Acer Aspire One--I have the original 9" screen, 3 cell battery one, got it for $350 off Newegg.com 6 months or so ago. I did get it with 1 GB of RAM and the 16 GB flash drive. I intentionally didn't buy one with a hard drive as I wanted something with no moving parts that I could chuck in the bike pannier without too much worry. I did upgrade it to the latest builds of Firefox, Thunderbird, and OpenOffice, which was a bit of a struggle with the Linpus Linux it comes with. One day I'll put Ubuntu Linux on it, but right now it's just for email, web surfing, and occasional word processing.

Only thing I miss is the larger 6-cell battery--I get about 2:45 of usable time before I have to plug in. Most places with WiFi you can find a plug at somewhere, otherwise I'd have mail-ordered the $100 upgrade battery already.

From what I've heard, these aren't the fastest Windows XP machines (another reason I stuck with Linux besides wanting to learn a new OS), but they are cheap as hell, don't weigh you down (mine is 2.2 lbs) and get the job done. It's kind of like having a "backup gun", something small and reliable stuck in your sock that you ALWAYS have, available and unobtrusive.

  • I ended up with the 10" and the 6-cell. Supposedly, it can go about 7 hours (please, peanut gallery). I'll admit that the keyboard is a bit hard to get used to but the portability is awesome. I got mine from Tigerdirect.com for $330.00.

  • I purchased the ACER Aspire One in March and love it! The 160 Gig hard drive gives me plenty of room for storage, the built-in webcam gives great images, and the compact size is a real plus! Obviously, the lack of an internal CD/DVD drive and the rather pitiful battery life are real annoyances. Overall, if I had to do it over, I'd probably opt to get a mini Dell with a much larger battery capacity.
  • I've got an Acer Aspire 1 and I love it. Took a few minutes to adjust to the small keyboard, but its great. I have Lynux installed, and I have heard that Windows is crap, so that's something to look into. But I LOVE my acer.
