My mechanic does inspections and he is a very upright guy. Been going to him for 20 years
Nam's Auto Mechanic Shop

Oh, here's a write up from another poster on here who went to nam:

How much are inspections anyway? I need to get mine redone this month...
-
$37 pass or fail, all places charge the same amount.
-
It's $37 I think. Pretty cheap anyway. I also like Nam's (thanks for the rec LTS, took my car to him for some body work) but there is also Pep Boys at 4th Ave. and 2nd St.

Technically, a non-expired, out-of-state inspection certificate is valid even after you've re-registered the car in NY state. Unfortunately, this doesn't always stop the traffic police from writing tickets.
We're inheriting a car from my husband's late father who lived in Pennsylvania. Wondering if anyone can recommend a reputable place in Brooklyn to get the car inspected for NY State?
Thanks! -
Thanks for the info - and Nam's is convenient given that we live on Baltic.

and thanks arches for the info about the out of state inspection certificate! -
New Millenium on 3rd Ave around 7th St.
Strauss on 4th Ave around 14th? -
i guess it is me, but I wouldn't trust Strauss or pep Boys to not come up with things wrong with the car during inspection just to make extra money off of you. But, that is me, i don't trust auto chain stores.
new Millenium on 3rd Avenue are good guys too, I used to work for a company that had all their cars fixed by Gus and Andreas, good guys. -

Seconds on that recommendation. We have used them for many years. They are fair and reliable.

In yalls experience, how long does it take to do an inspection? When I got my first inspection last year the mechanic told me to come back in TWO HOURS which seemed sort of excessive for an inspection (in NC they used to take me about 20 minutes!) Is it standard to have to waste a morning doing this or did I catch an off day?
-
They do only take about 20 to 30 minutes, but most of the time since in NY you have your inspection done at a private place, they have other people or other jobs ahead of you, most mechanic shops unless you are a long time customer or need it done in a hurry, will not make doing an inspection a priority. That is why they say to come back in a couple of hours.
Nam will usually have me wait and do my inspection right then and there, but, even being a customer of his for 20 years doesn't guarantee that, he will still ask if I can leave it sometimes depending on other work he (and his mechanics) have to do -

I actually used Pep Boys once for an inspection, after my guy - and seemingly everyone else on Third Avenue - either had broken machines or no stickers.

Pep Boys was fast, and they found nothing wrong with my 6 year old, problem-plagued car. -

not anymore... you have to inspect a vehicle when 1st registering it in your name now...
and OP, look up Brooklyn insurance costs before you accept that "free" car... you might reconsider taking it -

I've used the place on the corner of 14th St & 4th Ave several times and they are always quick and have never recommended any repairs for my 6 year old car. It's either an Auto Zone or Pep Boys, can't remember which. You can call them and see how busy they are. Last time I was able to bring it in and pick it up in a couple of hours.

Ah yes, that's true....out of state inspection only works if you are moving to NY and were the owner of the vehicle in another state first. My apologies.
Details:
If you did not get the vehicle from a NYS automobile dealer, you receive an inspection extension sticker. The sticker allows you 10 days from the registration date to get the vehicle inspected in NYS. Any NYS or out-of-state inspection issued to the previous registrant is not valid after the vehicle is registered to you. You must have the vehicle inspected.
If you are a non-resident who becomes a resident of NYS, your out-of-state inspection is valid until it expires, or for one year after the vehicle is registered in NYS, whichever comes first. After the inspection expires, you must have the vehicle inspected in NYS. If you receive an inspection extension sticker at the DMV office, destroy the sticker. -
