Best Cable/DSL Provider in the North Slope?

I'll be moving into a new apartment in the North Slope in a few weeks and I was wondering what people here have found to be the best Cable/DSL providers.

I know they're all kind of crap, but after a painful experience with Earthlink in my previous place I really want to get a feeling for what works and what doesn't.

Thanks!

  • i honestly don't know which to vote for.
  • Time Warner! I swear even in the worst storms my TW cable kept working.
I live in Sunset Park, but even when I was in Kensington (Coney Island ave and Beverly rd) I had Time Warner and it RAWKED! I have also lived all over queens, Elmhurst, Fresh Meadows, Astoria and Time Warner RAWKED!
  • Do a seach, this has been covered extensively. But what it comes down to is this. You only have Time Warner really. I do Roadrunner through TW right now.
  • You're not allowed to choose between optimum and time warner (south of flatbush you get time warner, north you get optimum.) TW lets you choose between internet from Road Runner, Earthlink, NY1 connect and one other, you get a different ip depending on your provider choice and the route your packets take is different after about the 4th hop, which is unfortunately after the biggest congestion hops. (aka look for speeds to be somewhat flaky from any provider through time warner) I have yet to try paying tw the extra $10 a month to get "faster" speeds (road runner turbo) maybe someone else who has can comment.

As for DSL you can select from a slew of different providers but it basically boils down to this, if you have a phone line you can get 6mbps/512kbps for about the same price as TW/Optimum (~$55/mo after the promos expire) whose speed is 10mbps/512kbps. If you don't have a phone line a headless install is generally $15 more a month. If you want faster speeds over DSL the price jumps to at least $100 a month.

There is no FIOS in the slope yet.

I am unaware of any other options for internet in the slope but would love to explore any if they exist. Despite my negative comments re: time warner, I have found the service to be mostly reliable, the only time I've had a full outage the line from our house to the wires in the back had rotted and fallen down, and I've yet to commit to an always slower then my current max speed (10mbps that is achieved at most times) DSL line instead of time warners occasionally shitty speeds. If they really do impose bandwidth caps I'll be the first in line for a new DSL install though.
  • Well, decided on my internet today and am going to go with Verizon even though it's just DSL and slower than Time Warner which is the forced choice for me if I wish to go with cable. In the end, I'd rather have slower service than give my money to a monopoly that doesn't want to improve service unless it can also cap bandwidth disproportionately.
  • I live in a 58 unit building that is wired for Time Warner. Verizon just finished a week's work here putting in conduits for Vios. Soon I will have a choice.

BTW the Coop was paid $50 per unit by Verizon for them to have the opportunity to offer me service.
