Help! Can anyone recommend a vet besides Animal Kind and HOpe?? -
I use park slope animal clinic on ppw and 5th street.
-
do a search and check the pets section for lots of info.
I use Prospect Park Animal Clinic (6th and PPW) and have been very happy with them. The staff is all really good with my dog and they haven't pushed vaccines on me that aren't required...we discuss it and I decide. No fear mongering about all the viruses and bacteria the dogs can get. -
We also use Prospect Park Animal Clinic and have been very happy with them - (718)768-6125.
-
We use Park Slope Vets. There good... nothing out of this world, but they are nice and fair.

There's a new place that opened up on Fulton and St James (a block east of Washington)
-
We use Park Slope Vets, i credit them with saving my cat's life, and, my dog goes to them also. IMO, the best vets around here and I have been to the people on 6th Avenue (terrible, terrible), Dr. Silverman on PPW and Animal Kind.
-
A lot of people like Dr. Maddon at Park Slope Veterinary, 413 5th Ave. Ask for that doc in particular, though. I took my pup there and saw I suppose their younger/newer vet and wasn't too psyched. But I've heard lots of praise for Maddon from various people I've met.

What are you trying to say? I've re-read this 3 times and have no idea. -
I raise my Hand. I can translate Long time sloper's answer, though I think it is quite clear.
Recommended..Park Slope Vets
Not recommending Animal Kind
PPW..Dr. Silverman's practice or 6th Ave Animal Clinic -
I know there are threads on this but its hard to search for a specific thing-
why all the hate for Animal Kind?
I brought my new pup there and was pleased with the treatment and price... -
I like Animal Kind. ..but I've only used it for an emergency. I can report that they were pricey, but seemed to give good care. (Dude got a deep bite from another dog that required some serious antibiotics)
We take our dog to a clinic upstate for regular care. Cheaper, easier to get an appointment.... -
From what I remember reading during my vet search, the reviews for Animal Kind were all over the place. Extremes on both ends. It seemed like there was a lot of variation by vets and that something I don't want to deal with.
There are three vets at PPAC (the one I use) and I (and my dog) like them all. The main receptionist can have a nasty attitude but everyone providing care is great, IMO. I can usually get an appointment when I want it and their location is very convenient for me. Plus, of online reviews a while back, it was one of the few places with lots of good reviews and basically no bad reviews which I liked.
My dog has only had one real health issue outside of regular care and I think they handled it well.
There are also lots of votes in older threads for the vet Mpmav1 recommended, Park Slope Vets. -
I go to Dr. Allen at 6th Ave Animal Clinic. Though I DON"T go to Dr. Dentler as she wants to do the most expensive tests all the time without talking it over with the parent of the pet (though I just heard she's no longer at that location). Dr. Allen is so attentive, sweet, thoughtful, and precise with his diagnosis and has been thorough with my doggie. My dog has had some issues on-and-off, Dr. Allen kept his chart on his desk and called every week just to check up on him. I have recommended him to all of my friends.

we go to Dr. SIlverman on PPW and 5th Street and have done so for the last 22 years My dogs have always been treated well

I am suprised and please that Dr. Dentler seems to be gone from that practice. Many years ago ( starting in the 80's) I saw her exclusively. In the 90's I had a yellow Lab that she adored. She did some surgery to remove a growth on his ear and he stayed there for 3 days to recover. She thought it would be one day but when she removed the packing from the ear he would shake his head and upset the clotting and she re-packed it and wanted him to be there for the extra days. When I went to pick him up the receptionist said just go in to Dr Dentler's office and there was danny lying down under her desk. She said she loved his company if she was doing paperwork and he had spent many hours with her and the office staff during his stay. Even then... I knew that attention was unusual for the way the office was run.
I think as she got older and I know she had some health issues she "ran out of steam" and the feeling in the office was rushed and certainly not that personal.
Long story and my point is neither to praise or bash Dr. Dentler but it occurs to me that there are so many factors in choosing a Vet. Sometimes one that works for you and your current pet just doesn't keep working with you and another pet or something internal to the practice does change the quality of care. -

My problem with Animal Kind were their prices and extremely long waits.

And, thank you veets for translating my previous post, i thought I was clear. -

I thought Dr. Dentler was the owner of that practice, no? the older, African American lady vet, or, am I confusing her with someone else? if so, she was horrible, absolutely horrible!!!! -

Sounds like you just described Dr Dentler and she founded this practice and perhaps things have changed now. -

I second this. I had Oscar neutered at 6 months. The bill from Animal Kind was 525.00 with no overnight stay and no complications. Just a simple neuter. I thought that was an insane amount of money.
My problem with Animal Kind were their prices and extremely long waits.
O.K. a slight defense for Animal Kind.
I am not saying that what you paid is too much or too little but I would bet that the fee included..
Pre- Blood testing
Intubation during surgery
IV line in place from beginning to end of surgery
Pre-sedation before surgery
Post operative pain meds
Oral pain meds to take home -
I didn't get any oral meds for him to take at home. It's been nearly 5 years so I don't remember everything else on the bill but I know he got nothing to take after.
And I'm not saying they didn't do a good job or that they were somehow lacking in care - just that I thought that was an exorbitant amount of money to pay and I chalked it up to (at the time) Park Slope style pricing. -
Go to Animal Kind in emergency situations as they are open very late. However, why go there if there are plenty of other knowledgeable, friendly, and less expensive alternatives?

I get the feeling she was good a long time ago, now that I read your story. I have a neighbor who liked her alot too, starting 20 years ago or so, but other than him I've heard nothing but horror stories.
My experience at 6th Ave Animal Clinic was AWFUL, I thiiiiink in 2002. From the vet (Dr. Dentler) to the techs, my dog was really mishandled and it was a nightmare for us. I was thrilled to get charged $$ at Animal Kind following that experience, although I felt like Animal Kind were playing to the Park SLope stereotype -- and in our case recommending expensive tests that weren't actually going to give us treatable info. No thanks, no MRI. It was a real drag.
We ended up over with Dr Julie Morris at Animal Healing Arts on Henry St -- small practice, smart and skilled vet, although she puts some people off. I know she cares, has a skilled staff, looks at all sorts of options (Western meds, acupuncture, etc) and isn't gouging. -

Well one reason is that if they give your pet ongoing care they have a health record on your pet AND you will likely be seeing a vet you already know. Frankly, I would be more likely to tell you to run your pet in to the City on an emergency and go to the Animal medical Center. The price is gonna be the same, the care even one notch above Ak and there would be the same lack of continuity of care. Just my opinion. Not looking for an argument. -
Pitu I have heard great things about Dr. Julie Morris.

A vet keeping records of your pet and providing ongoing care is not a plus... that's veterinary practice. I don't understand why these are pluses for going to AK. -
Dr. Julie Morris is wonderful. We used her for a short time but we have a lot of animals and really need to use an office that's open 7 days. Unfortunately, Dr. Julie was closed on Sundays and Mondays so we couldn't continue using her. That's when we started using Prospect Park Animal and have been very happy there. For people with a more typical number of pets, I would recommend Dr. Julie Morris very highly.

I think veets is saying it's nice to have the emergency vet be your regular vet, and so have your pet's records, that's all.
FWIW, at AK, I ended up seeing several different vets on different visits, as a new patient and due to their schedules, unlike what was noted somewhre upthread. I got a strong sense that if you saw the main doc, you were in the best shape. Otherwise, I don't think it was anything special. For people with a more typical number of pets, I would recommend Dr. Julie Morris very highly.
Intriguing...what you got over there, jf22561? -

Just so folks have an idea about what that means in terms of money...we took our dog to the famous emergency Animal Medical Ctr - west side in the 50s and found it was around $1000/day to check your dog in overnight, and that's before any procedural stuff. I wish I had my bill handy to be more specific -- this was for a dog btw.

I suppose that makes sense, but it's an emergency room visit: how much do they really need to know your pets medical history that you couldn't tell them? And should you really base your everyday vet choice on who will have your files on the chance you need an ER visit and cant' get into your regular vet? Seems to me that there are about 100 priorities I would put before this.
Not trying to get argumentative... just saying.
