What subway from Penn Station to Park Slope? — Brooklynian

What subway from Penn Station to Park Slope?

longtimesloper
edited November -1 in Park Slope
I haven't been on a subway in years. A friend of mine is coming into town next week and has asked me for directions from Penn Station to my house (low number street by 7th Avenue).

What subway does she take and to what station here? Thanks!

  • Have her walk one avenue over to 6th avenue and take the F downtown. Or, if she doesn't want to go above ground, she could take the A/C/E from inside Penn station downtown to West 4th street and transfer downstaurs to the F. Your stop if the 7th avenue stop.
  • You can switch from an A/C to an F on the same level, across the platform at Burrough Hall.

Also, if you want really detailed directions, use http://www.hopstop.com/?city=newyork

You can enter Penn Station as the starting address. Hit re-route for other options.

Actually, the same-platform transfer from the A/C to the F is Jay Street.
The F doesn't stop at Borrough Hall.
  • So, take the A or C right inside Penn Station to jay Street, then right across the platform she can hop on the F and take that to 7th Avenue here in the Slope?

I am looking at stop hop also.

    thanks everyone

Oops. I just call them the same thing. Some train I took regularly (maybe a 4?) that had the announcements always called the stop "Jay Street/Burrough Hall".

Just use hopstop, that'll tell you what you want.
  • Although, if she is coming on a weekend, the F is all F-ed up and she would have to transfer to the G at Hoyt Schermerhorn................. disaster!

The station name where the F stops is Jay Street-Borrough Hall

She's coming in on a Wednesday morning, so, i would prefer her on the F.

just sent her directions from the HopStop site, pretty cool
  • isnt B or Q to 7th ave the right answer?
i guess it depends on where you are on 7th
    the F train is terrible
  • Why not take the Seventh Avenue express train from Penn Station all the way to Grand Army Plaza?
  • I love the F!!!!!!! It's also the closest train to my house.

The Q goes to 7th and Flatbush, so the F at 9th street is better for a numbered street.

oops on my part ! yes, they are both part of the name.

And yes, that G train to Hoyt-Schermer would be pretty confusing for a visitor.
  • Wow, I cannot believe you haven't been on the subway in years!
  • Of course if this is happening on the week-end, all bets are off. You might have to take the C to Hoyt–Schermerhorn and transfer to the G running on the F line.

Go to mta.info and see which trains are being rerouted to where for the week-end.
  • I think I might be jealous of the fact that you haven't been on the subway in years, but I think it also means you must have a car to deal with around here, of which I am not jealous :)
  • It's nice out. Take the N, Q, B, F, or R to 34th and walk a block! Done!

    Years?

She should take walk over to 6th Ave and take the F to 7th Ave. Exit at the back of the train at 7th Ave and 9th St. It is a downhill walk to your house.

It must be about 15 years now that I haven't been on a subway, haven't worked in the city for that long.

    O M G
    terrifying aint it ?

    from penn station
take the uptown 2 to 96th st and broadway
take the crosstown bus to 96 and LEX
take the downtown 6 train to 86th street
take the 4 to 59th st
take the R to Union st.
take the bus to union st /7th ave

  • Why is it so funny because I asked for directions? WTH?
  • LongTimeSloper wrote: Why is it so funny because I asked for directions? WTH?
i dont find the question unusual. you dont use trains much.

the funny part is the variety of responses despite the fact that
there is an express train that goes from penn station to grand army.

Which only serves to reinforce that most people on this board do not live here ,
have no freakin clue what they are talking about,
and prefer circuitous routes when a direct one is available.

but wait there is a glimmer of hope !
    after all,
no one suggested that your friend take the LIRR
from penn station to long island and then come back thru atlantic ave.
  • Garfunky, the 2/3 is express from Penn Station to Grand Army, and also stops at Bergen, but LTS lives on 7th ave in the numbered streets, so it's a bit of a walk from either of those stations.

How is this even possible?? Do you never leave your immediate neighborhood of Park Slope? Never go into Manhattan for a show? Or another part of Brooklyn, for that matter? Museum? Restaurant? Anything? Or do you just drive everywhere that you go?

I'm really not trying to be snarky with you -- I'm just honestly really suprised and curious! I guess cause I'm on the subway constantly... I just don't know how you've avoided it for 15 years! (Or why you would want to, frankly. Pain in the ass that it can be, the subway is such a huge part of living in NYC...)
  • What do you mean, how is it possible? There are modes of transportation other than subways, such as cars, walking and cabs. It has been more than easily avoided for 15 years, and, yes, we go to other parts of Brooklyn all the time, as well as Queens, Long Island and Manhattan. hate, hate, hated the subway when I had to use it and do not miss it at all!!!!
  • scarlett wrote: Garfunky, the 2/3 is express from Penn Station to Grand Army, and also stops at Bergen, but LTS lives on 7th ave in the numbered streets, so it's a bit of a walk from either of those stations.
actually its equidistant to 7th ave 1st st from either the F or GAP.

the 2 is actually IN penn station, so walking one avenue block in manhattan to to get on a SLOW local to save walking a block or two here doesnt really make sense.
it also doesnt make sense to overcomplicate things for someone who needs directions. (particularly when said direction will then be given by someone who doesnt use the subways much to begin with)

get on 2/3 get out at gap walk 7 blocks.

i dont care what train her friend takes,
i simply find it amusing that the obvious was blatantly overlooked.
