Shooting at NY and Park Place

Cops at our door this morning. They said it was at 838 Park Place at Nostrand and the guy was in critical condition. That's about 50 feet from my front door. Wish they'd do something about this end of the block.

Sad to say, but if you see a group lingering on corner, not on their way somewhere, there is probably street commerce going on. Yup, its a stereotype, but when community safety is in the crosshairs, lets create a different standard of decorum in the neighborhood. My response is to call 311 continuously, to report suspicious activity.
If nothing happens to disperse the group call again every hour. Be sure to record the confirmation number, date and time. After 8 hours you can call 311 to find out the disposition of the report. Very often, these reports are fraudulently closed out by the 77th Pct, Keep a record and have your block association escalate with the Mayor's office, the command at 77Pct, the documented non-performance by the 77th Pct.
If you don't demand that quality of life issues be given the same attention as in Hasidic Crown Heights, the 77 Pct, will you people don't care. -
Unfortunately, the closing out of these complaints seems to happen with no action actually being taken. I will start keeping a record from now on and I will be more diligent about calling 311. I wish more people in my neighborhood would call to complain. Maybe then something would happen.

There was a party at 838 Park last night. Lots of hanging out on that corner as a result. One of the partygoers was shot down at the opposite corner in front of 910. About an hour after that shooting, (with the party continuing) there was another fight on the corner at Nostrand and Park in front of the bodega. More shots fired, although it seems no one was injured that time. Cops were saying the guy who was shot was critical this morning. Sorry to hear that he died.
I just wish the folks that live in those buildings would be more vigilent about making the partygoers stay inside instead of their birthday parties/baby showers/ bridal showers/anniversary parties turning into block parties with kids fighting in the streets. Its the second or third time its happened and on one of these occasions, someone is going to discharge a weapon and kill some innocent bystander or grandma sleeping in her bed. -
I don't know if it will do any good, but I wrote a letter yesterday. Maybe, as Harrytrav says, we all start complaining we'll get some action. Here's the letter. Please feel free to use it.

There was another shooting on my block last night. It's disturbing to answer the door only to find police officers canvassing the neighborhood, asking for information about gun violence 100 feet away from our front door.
We have lived on this block for four years. We bought our home here, and we enjoy the neighborhood. We like our neighbors and they like us. We would like to stay here, but my wife and I are seriously considering selling because of incidents like last night, and many others.
I called 311 yesterday around 6pm to tell them it sounded like someone was being assaulted in an apartment building two doors away. Police came, but since no-one would let them in the building, they left. The screaming, crying and yelling continued after they left.
All these incidents are related because the west end of the 800 block of Park Place at Nostrand Avenue is like the wild west every night. We call 311 to complain and nothing seems to change. The police may or may not show up, and when they leave everything continues as before.
My suggestion is to write tickets. For loitering, for disturbing the peace, for breaking the noise laws, for open liquor, anything.
I understand the NYPD is overworked and understaffed. I understand that it's easy to blow off so-called quality of life calls because there's always something more important to take care of. But, as I said, these issues are all related. If the wild west atmosphere is allowed to continue with no consequences, then I will probably hear of more shootings in my neighborhood.
My wife and I don't want to leave. We would really like to stay. We can't sleep because of the noise at night and our health is suffering. Living here should not be an ordeal.
Please help us!
Thank you. -

I could not find Cosgrove's email address anywhere which is why I wrote him a letter. Thanks for the other links, too. Oh, and Karim Camara is not a state senator, but a state assemblyman. He lives on the block in question.

If you think someone is being assaulted call 911. This way not only will it get to the dispatcher quicker, but it will also provide a number for the dispatcher to call if the police need to get entry into the building.

The 311 call was put through to 911 which dispatched the police officers.

I just heard that the youth involved survived and is in the hospital. He apparently lives at 838 Park Place, near Nostrand.

Why can't you move? -
We don't want to move. We want the noise and shootings to stop.

Ok then, i guess if noise is the only problem. What about safety in your area? -
No, noise and shootings are the main problems. Otherwise, it's a pretty safe place to live. I like it here. I don't want to move.
