NEED A DSL GURU
I have been having troubles with my AT&T DSL account, and their own tech support has been unable to help me resolve the problem.
Things seem to come down to the fact that my signal has dropped because there is "noise on the line," however the tech who comes out to test my line is somehow unable to detect said noise. I'm reluctant to pay for yet another tech to come out and look again, but then say he can't also check my computer becuase he just checks phone lines, and...I'm also unemployed, so I can't afford to keep farting around like this.
I would be willing to pay someone who could help, provided some kind of installment plan is worked out. I just want this bloody DSL line to work.
Can anyone recommend someone who may be able to help with this?
FAIR WARNING; Please, do NOT tell me to switch to cable. I can only get Time Warner in my area and I have a WHOLE other set of problems with my TW television account, so I do not want to start involving them in my Internet connection as well. Thanks.

Did they swap out the modem?
Either the modem connects or it doesn't.
Noise in the line wouldn't be your problem. That's on them. Anything after the modem would be your issue to solve.
Do you have a router or direct connect to computer?
If there is a router in between, take it out of the loop, go directly from modem to computer. Check status over time to rule out router.
They should have done all those things. Sounds like they are giving you the run around. -
We had a lot of problems with noise on the line when we first got DSL. Eventually they had to replace the line that went from the house to the telephone pole. They were reluctant to do that, it took several trips, calls and dramas to get them to fix it. It was worth it though. The DSL works fine now. If you hear hissing on the line when you call someone, you'll have problems with the DSL signal.

I actually got it fixed -- my DSL still doesn't work when I'm actually on the phone, but I'm okay with that. Somehow my modem had improper information for my username and password -- retyping that in properly was all it took to fix it.
The drama just unfolded because I had not ever changed that information myself from the FIRST time I typed it in, so there was some back-and-forth about whether I could get it from them -- which was compouned by the fact that they had an improper service address for me, which stemmed from an error the guy who took my sales call made back in October. So there was a little back-and-forth about whether they could give it to me even though I said that no, I did not live on Orange Street, nor had I ever.
But I've got it back now, so it seems to be good.
