Mosquito traps: CO2 vs. electric — Brooklynian

Mosquito traps: CO2 vs. electric

This is a dupe of a post on the "Brooklyn & Beyond"board for SSP and GWH residents. If you want to vote on the "poll" I created, go to that post.

Howdy all...

My neighbors and I are thinking of pooling (no pun intended) on a mosquito attractor/trap. Like many Brooklynites, we are trapped in our home's during the summer unless we want to get eaten alive by the ever present Asian Tiger Mosquito...even during the day too!

Before they envelope our yards, I thought I'd reach out to the Boards and see if anyone has had any experience with these traps...

1. CO2 canister versions vs. electric: which one is better? Pros/Cons?

2. Are their environmental concerns with the CO2 version not being "green?"

3. Do these things even work? Or will they work with the Asian Tiger Mosquito?

Thanks in advance for anyone who has any info.

  • I'm curious about this as I am constantly eaten alive too. How expensive are those things?

please let me know if you find a good solution
  • Well, if any one responds! (besides you!) ;)
  • I bought one of the mega catch alphas for $100: http://www.megacatch.com/

I don't use the attractants but it still works somewhat. I won't say that I have a mosquito free backyard but when I empty it and see what it's caught I know it's doing something and with a little use of Off I can hang out in the backyard.

The one I have is small and electric but they have larger ones and ones that use CO2 as well. I'm not a fan of using CO2 due to the environmental aspects but apparently it does a better job.

I think the key in Brooklyn backyards is getting as many neighbors to participate in good practices to reduce the population, i.e. remove standing water, keep grass trimmed, etc. Since the alpha units are small you can also have a few of them for the same cost as one larger unit, I'm not sure what would be more effective.

Let us know what you go with and what kind of results you get.
