That is what the homes on Underhill (bet. Dean and Bergen) are. Also the ones along Dean St and Bergen St (bet. Vand. & Underhill). The 3 family homes on Underhill sold for somewhere in the neighborhood of $390,000 and the single family homes were $150,000 or $175,000. In order to qualify you had to make between a certain amount of money a year. It was done by lottery and it was given to first time homeowner who lives in the neighborhood (they went by the zip code on your tax return). There is also the apartment building on Pacific (closer to Underhill) which determines the amount of your rent in the same way. If you check out the HUD website they list the developments that are in this area as well. -

If people are really concerned about the loss of affordable housing and its impact on some of the more vulnerable populations in our neighborhood, start attending CB 8's Housing Committee meetings.
-
if they are that concern about the poor of the area. why dont they get together and buy a few buildings with their pool money! and have low income housing! its puting money where your mouth is.

Seeing this thread reminded me of a flyer I saw in the lobby of my building this morning: tomorrow from noon to 4pm, there's a bake sale in front of 411 St. Johns Pl to raise money for the Annual Child Safety Day a.k.a. the St. Johns Pl Summer Block Party. Go take a stroll down "Crazy Lane" and buy a cookie or something and help out the nabe youth.
-
Why do you guys call that block "Crazy Lane?" To me it's always been St. Johns b/t Underhill and Wash....

I don't think anyone would thank anyone else for bumping these threads. -
This thread has moved me in so many ways, I'd like to offer a song in trubute to the passing of this wonderful stretch of PH.

Subject: insensitivity
Gentrification and displacement are part of the reality of living in the Heights. But cheerleading for displacement is plain insensitive. I cannot imagine the hardship and pain that moving will cause for some of the residents of the buildings for sale.
p.s. moderator, it would be great to ammend the main article to include the contrary perspective. -

Did anyone else check out the bakesale? They only had chocolate stuff left when I went by, but it seemed like stuff was selling like hotcakes. -

This is not a blog. It is a message board. Therefore the first article in the thread has no more importance or authority than the ones that come after it, and what you're suggesting doesn't make sense.
