A few days ago I just happened to be on my roof, when out the corner of my eye I saw a big bird holding a little featherless bird. When I yelled out to my neighbor who was on the roof with me, the big bird flew away and thats when I realized it was a hawk. It's wings were huge. The hawk flew a few houses away to the top of a building and started eating the little bird. I stood on the roof watching in amazement and I noticed there were feathers all over the roof. Wow, what an experience!
(I live down the block from prospect park)
Anyone else see it?

  • i remember one afternoon
walking through the park and a hawk
flying overhead, dropped part of a mouse/rat in front of me
    kerplunkkkk onto the trail floor
    either as a territorial alert,
    or just cause it could

    hawks are cool
everytime i hear their 'squawwwwk' from the sky
i think of that silly buick car commercial
  • I've seen them in the park many times. Once I saw three of them trying to get up the nerve to pick up a dead squirrel that was lying on the park road. They would swoop down but then get spooked by the people watching.

A few years ago, I had a mouse problem. I couldn't bring myself to kill the little beasties, so I would trap them in those humane traps and set them free in Prospect Park. One time I let the mouse out of the trap, it ran, and a hawk swooped down and carried it off. After that, I decided I wasn't really doing the mice any favors and started using snap traps.

Once I was running in the park and saw one of the equally legendary Prospect park chickens (where do they come from?) among some bushes. Seconds later, a hawk came crashing down from the sky into the foliage in the general vicinity of where I had seen the chicken. BAGAWWWWK! I didn't manage to see who had survived the encounter.
  • I first noticed hawks around Park Slope & Prospect Park 10 years ago. Since then I've been hooked on them. We've had two to three pairs of Red-tailed Hawks nesting in the area for about 15 years. You'll also occasionally see Sharp-shinned Hawks, Cooper's Hawks, Ospreys, Merlins, Kestrels and Peregrine Falcons. Hey, it's a jungle out there! Keep an eye on your chihuahua ;-)

Whoa - there are chickens in Prospect Park? That's up there with the Greenwood Cemetery parrots.
  • The chickens are usually the result of Santaria followers loosing one of their spring sacrifices. I like the idea of a mere chicken outsmarting humans. Unfortunately, they ultimately loose the battle of wits to the hawks. Also, about 10 years ago a Guinea fowl showed up near the Rose Garden and lasted for about a month.
