Pfft.
It depends who's behind the bar at Freddy's. Matt usually stays until everyone's done drinking, which has been known on occasion to last until the next bar shift at noon.
I've been at all three places until dawn, so it depends what you're looking for at 4 am, I guess. -

someplace to stay until 5 or 6 a.m., really. -

None of them are ever guaranteed to stay open til 5 or 6. That is, after all, illegal.
Again, it depends on the night. Friday or Saturay, all three will be open all night.
Wednesdays, you might have a problem. And I mean, you might have a problem. -
I've seen the three of those places beat each other at the open late contest. I don't know if I could mess with Mooney's at any time of night. That's a drinker's bar par excellence. Depressing. Between O'Connor's and Freddy's, they both suck, but O'Connor's has the price advantage, but loses the body odor in the back contest. That place reeks. Freddy's smells awful too, but at least there's no BO factor. But, it is overpriced for the service, music and decor. Fuck it, stinky neighborhood invaders, or overpriced shitty beer? I'm knocking on Muhammad's bulletproof window, waking Abdullah up, and gettin' me a 40 of Busch, and a bag of sour cream and onion UTZ. Hope it's a good batch!

Freddy's certainly stinks, but... overpriced? Two fitty pbr, three buck buds? Granted, they're both shitty beers, but they're sure as hell not overpriced! -
The last time I was at Mooney's (last summer) the Buds were $2.25 a bottle. Mooney's does not serve PBR, that neo-hipster beer, because Mooney's is a GENUINE dive bar, like the ones that used to dot the neighborhood back in THE GOOD OLD DAYS before the yuppie scum and their strollers and mortgage rates and fancy cars and latte and sushi and $35 bottles of wine moved in and pushed THE GOOD WORKING CLASS FOLKS out on their asses!
Oops, wrong thread...what was that called, Gentriconfrontation? -
Yeah, Mooney's is the real deal. I gotta hand it ot that place. But PBR is legit, homey. That's been a staple since high school, and that was, oh, about 20 years ago.
-
Yea, I know that PBR is legit. I was just joking about Pensodoyssey's funny game. If you want an excellent selection of bad beer, try Moonshine on Columbia Street - it's amazing! As of last summer, they were selling 40s.
-
What? 40's? I'm there, even if they don't have them anymore. The last place that sold the big bottles that I know of, was Soul Kitchen's quarts of Colt 45 back in the '90s.
-
Moonshine is UNFUCKWITHABLE.
$5, four-beer buckets! Of anything canned!! -
Only Floyd can fuck with that. $12 for the 12 beer can sampler. Each beer of the twelve is different.

that would be great if it were true, but sadly it's not. Floyd's deal is 6 for twelve, which doesnt even beat out Last Exit across the street which has 6 for ten. Trust me, I know my area buckets. -
That may all be true, but Floyd has the best selection.
-
I love Mooney's. I mean, I like it better than Freddy's, but maybe that's cause it's totally and completely busted in Mooney's. I could be more wasted than I've ever been in my life in there but my liver is probably still the healthiest. and there's something very satisfying about eating food from carneviento at their bar. it feels right.

wrong again...........go to Moonshine. They have a massive selection and their buckets are you-call-it. -
Okay balls man. You win the alcohol addict contest. I am supremely humbled.
-
Subject: Dammit! You know its funny!
Stolen from the pages of Craig's List Rants and Raves:
Q: Why is Freddy's so windy?
A: Because O'connors sucks and Mooney's blows.
I've said too much. I must go now, for my life is peril. -
I agree with Mr. Balls - Moonshine rocks! Prospect Heights NEEDS a bar like that.
Still, IMO, Mooney's is the only genuine dive in the area. Freddy's and O'Connor's are great, but the hipster element drains some of the barfly atmosphere for me.
And Jackie's on 5th Ave., now there's a bar.
Of course, Sunset Park has some true gems (Irish Haven, Green Isle), and then we get into Bay Ridge, which probably has more bars per square foot than Williamsburg or the Upper East Side.
And the list goes on... -

Jack you might be the one to remember this - do you remember the name of the dive bar that was on the corner of Court Street and State (next to the original home of Queen Pizzaria)?

Hi Stacey,
Yes, I have vague recollections of that place. I believe it was called Julio's Place, at least in it's last incarnation.
My favorite bygone bar, however, was The Roost, near Methodist Hospital on 7th Avenue. It's now a cabinet store, I think. There also used to be a cool place called the Three Star Bar and Grill on 6th and 20th(?), but it closed in the early 90s.
I wonder if Jackie's will last, given how rapidly 5th Ave. is gentrifying. I must say, it's nice to have a bar where an older gentleman will call you a "nice boy" for playing Tommy Dorsey in the jukebox. -
