BOARD RANKS (was: Easier than the PS Milfs!)
It's too easy to become a "Grand Master" on this board. I vote for upping the criteria/# of posts. I feel I've been actively posting for like a week or two but it should take me a couple months, no? This, of course, really does not matter even in the slightest, but I just had my morning cup of coffee and now that I'm awake, I thought I needed to write something. Maybe this is why I moved up so quickly, dumb, pointless posts.
Hope you all had a nice weekend! Great weather!

Hmm, those are pretty old posts. Guess no progress was ever made...
-
Yeah, I kind of liked the idea of a more elaborate system, but don't have the power to put it in place...
-
Ahh.... boaty..
What ever happened to her? I hope the police don't find her in her dentist's basement. -
it should be like
500 posts = NINJA
1000 posts = DALAI LAMA -

Yeah, it is a little too easy, but at least we have the best neighborhood blog in the world. So, if the criteria is changed, does that mean that present GMasters get busted down and demoted?
-
Hah, I'm a Grand Master!
-
Are PS MILFs really that easy?
-
OK, OK... Sorry this hasn't been a priority.
EmilyM was just granted super-leet Admin status, so she can lead the charge...
However....... the problem with counting posts is that certain users get rewarded for overposting, even if the post is no more substantive than "I agree :P"
It would be better to have a "karma" system, where you could vote on people's posts, and the thread itself would be ranked higher the more votes it gets. Is there anything like that for phpBB or SMF message boards? -

In May 1772 - Watauga Association formed in East Tennessee as the first independent Anglo-American government. -

. anyway the system does need a update. the current system is just too low on the count. -

That I don't really know. I just like to bust 'em on this forum since no one but me from PS seems to post. So I usually have to post in PH where all the active people are!! -

I'd be fine with a demotion, I can work back up to grand poobah. -
SMF definitely has a karma system. You can either allow users to "applaud" or "smite" each other, or, if you're a little more cautious, you can have only "applaud" turned on. You can also make it so a given user can only "applaud" or "smite" a certain number of times in an hour, to keep people from continually smiting people they dislike.

you know if a system like that is ever implamented folks will create alts to destory posters they dont like. -
Okay, so what kind of rank system do we want to have? I think it makes the most sense if each rank is successively slightly harder to get. Back when no one had over 500 posts (c.f. the first post I linked to above) I suggested something like this:
0 - "can't stay logged in"
I guess we'd now have to spread that out even more, something like this:
50 - "creates outdoor loudness"
150 - "bruce ratner's love child"
300 - "has 77th precinct on speed dial"
500 - "memorized soda jukebox"
800 - "heats home with oil" etc.
50
200
500
1000
2000
3000 etc.
As for the titles, I'm not sure. I feel like the jokes move pretty quickly--is "heats home with oil" still funny a year later? What if we stuck with Newbie, Regular, Insider, Grand Master and then added more high-falutin' titles beyond that? I guess it would be a little confusing if most of the Grand Masters stopped being Grand Masters suddenly, so maybe it should be Newbie, Regular, Insider, Something new #1, Something new #2, etc. -

Well, I'd like to think that people have better things to do than smite somebody under login 1, smite them under login 2, smite them under login 3, then wait an hour, come back and smite them again under all three alts....
But, yeah, if that's a problem, you can make it so people can only applaud. The only way to criticize people in that case is to not applaud them.
Also, just to be clear: this feature doesn't exist in phpBB (AFAIK). It exists in SMF, which is an alternate board software that I happen to like and I think dailyheights might be considering trying out. -

You're only suggesting that because Carnivore will get there first. I approve! -

I'm in favor of the old titles plus a few more squeezed in between. Let's keep the distances at like 100 post or something, so for every 100 posts you get a new title... that's be a static goal to work toward, if you're obsessive/bored enough keep track of these things (like me).

maybe 600 should be "anonymous guest"

How about:
Newbie 0-49
Local 50-199
Insider 200-299
Soda Regular 300-399 (Soda Jerk?)
bruce ratner's love child 400-499 (some things never get old)
Crabby Native 500-599
Grand Master 600-999
Something more creative than I can come up with 1000-1999
another bit of creativity 2000+ -

I still say "anonymous guest" and "way too incestial" need to be ranks. ranks yet to be achieved by Carnivore.
