Small Town Brooklyn - closed forever? NO! — Brooklynian

Small Town Brooklyn - closed forever? NO!

edited November -1 in Park Slope
I went to the Small Town Brooklyn website today ( http://www.smalltownbrooklyn.com )
and there was a note on the homepage that said they were closing up shop.

The website was basically a series of graphic maps of various Brooklyn neighborhoods, including Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn Heights and others, with every store front on every street labeled with a name and phone number. It was a very useful site.

Sorry to see it go and thanks to the two people who ran it for so long.

  • I never knew about this website (and am sorry I didn't). Doy you think it was the cost of hosting or something?
  • I, too, was a big fan of this site. Sorry to see it go. It was so handy for people with crappy memories like me who could only remember the general location of a business... I could go there and click through the blocks and find what I was thinking of...
  • I don't know why it closed. Cost of hosting? Maybe. I'd guess that time and maintenance might have had something to do with it, but I really have no idea.

But yeah, if I had to tell someone what block Bogota was on or if the Tea Lounge on Union was between 5th and 6th or between 6th and 7th, this was the site to go to...
  • Oh, even though that website hadn't been updated in a couple of years, I still found it handy, that stinks, why would they close it up?

Well, it is totally gone, when you go there now you get something that says "Welcome to Exit 5"
  • I loved that site...bummer.

Yeah, me too. Very VERY useful -- although I kept wishing they would do a graphic design update. Anybody know the site owners? It would be awesome if that wonderful database of theirs would have a second life . . .
  • o duh, they have a notice up still

Sorry to say we're closing shop - maybe for a few months, perhaps forever.

While Google Earth maps are nice, nothing beat Smalltownbrooklyn.com for its low-tech way of of disseminating community information, right down to the individual storefronts throughout Downtown Brooklyn. Ten years is a long run. Do let us know if you can't do without us. We'll file all your e-mail away for future reference - and hopefully notification that we're back up and running.

  • I know the site owners well. I will direct them towards this thread.
  • when i mentioned this thread to Bob Ipcar, he wrote back,
    I'm getting tons of emails.

Looks like I'll have to put it back up.

    thanks for the update, shiskie
  • wow I was really sad to see this offline, I used it to jog my memory a lot of times. I can only imagine the huge amount of effort it would take to keep it up to date.
  • Subject: Bummed!

Was just looking for Olive Vine's # and am SO BUMMED to find Small Town Brooklyn gone. I found it about ten years ago and have used it regularly. It had many and various application to my personal and professional life and I’m sorry to see it go.

  • Subject: Oh no!

I used this website at least weekly. I am so sad!
  • www.smalltownbrooklyn.com's scrollable street maps rock! This is one of my favorite websites.
  • Did they say why they shut the website down to begin with? is it just too hard to update it?
  • The site was real useful. Maybe he can put it back in a way the online community can update the storefront info. Bob could just moderate the posts.

That would be cool - wiki like, or perhaps he could solicit volunteers to cover designated areas and let him know when there are changes. I'm sure a lot of us would be happy to send in information about the openings/closings on the streets we frequent...
  • ^^Great idea, I would be willing to do that
  • so i suggested to bob that he log into Brooklynian and make a statement here. barring that, i told him i'd deliver a message here if he'd rather. this is the reply:
Don't think I'll log on just yet but I've received almost a hundred emails this past week.

So tell them STBrooklyn will be back up in a few weeks. Need to trim it here and there. Then Denali and I will do the Street updates once more

    Nice to be appreciated.
    Bob
PS Denali is his big Italian Spinone pooch :)
  • WAIT, I totally think I know that dog!

And I'd be more than happy to send in openings/closings/changes.
  • Add me to the list of folks who would be glad to help with the updating! Small Town Brooklyn has been so incredibly useful to me over the years, and I'd be glad to give back. :)
  • Well, that is great to hear! Still curious as to why he shut the site down to begin with.

And, again, I would be willing to help, I could at least do my area.
  • WOO-HOO! The site's back up!

I've checked up on the site every few days ever since shishkab's posts and today I found the site back up. Again, a big thanks to the people who run the site, and thanks to shish for letting them know we missed them.
  • Awesome news. I was just on the other day looking for something and they weren't up making me think they never would be. We love small town brooklyn!!!!
  • glad to hear it's back! Why they took it down to begin with, who knows
