I told her I took a picture of Terry right after it happened, if she'd like to see - if she thought it was not him or something.
Also, I would contact Fido - http://www.fidobrooklyn.org/ - rather than the Park's Dept. The people from Fido are really good about letting people know the rules. I think letting them know about it will do more to get the word out to owners and won't raise any fears with the authorities about lawsuits, etc. (a la what happened in Queens recently) -

I did let FIDO know, pretty soon after it happened. The woman from FIDO offered to call the dog walker (since that's all the info I had) - she did, and received no response.
She also told me she gets alot of email about incidents of various kinds. They aren't really set up to keep track, and have no way of handling unresponsive owners as far as I know. It's all based on people acting responsibly. -
Maybe we can get some "Terry Bites!" T-shirts printed up and wear them at the dog run.

Love it!!!!! -
just a little follow up
dog law info here:
http://www.urbanhound.com/houndLaw/ShowAnswer.asp?QID=126
"Finally, if you're bitten by a dog, get as much information about the dog and his owners as possible (including the dog's license number, if he has one). Then call the Department of Health's Veterinarian Public Health division at (212) 676-2483. They will double check that the dog's rabies vaccination is current. As well, under New York's "dangerous dog" law (Local Law 2 of 1991), if the dog's attack was unprovoked, the City may require the owners to muzzle or confine the dog, attend obedience class, carry liability insurance, or, in extreme cases, have the dog put down. "
"dog bites human" report form online here:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/vet/vetegp.shtml
call 311 with "dog bites dog" and they take a report for the Parks Dept, who has their own enforcement division. they give you a confirmation # to follow up what happened.
GET OWNER INFO if you are involved in an incident!
UPDATE: Parks actually called me back for more info.
PM me if something happens with your dog and Terry, I'll give you the direct contact at Parks. They refer it to the local precinct if they are going to enforce something.
You can call the Brooklyn Parks Enforcement Patrol Office directly at 718 437-1351. Sgt. Johnson.
If you don't know the information on the owner of the dog who bit your dog, you probably don't want to call nyc animal control, because they might put *your* dog into quarantine! or so the vet said . . . -
Subject: The Muppety Irish Wolfhound
Hey all -
HEE! The massive cream sable Muppety Irish Wolfhound walked with the fawn & white Whippet is mine. Y'all probably see him around 6th Ave & 9th St. w/ my boyfriend or our dog walker. He's never bitten another dog, and his is NEVER off-leash, so I'm sure hoping no one is pointing and blaming. He was indeed at the park on Sunday, but that's VERY rare. He's generally street-walked, out in our backyard, or upstate.
I'm deeply amused that he's being called Muppety, 'cause we're always accusing him of that. His name is Mordred, by the way, but he'll also answer to Smeddles, Great Big Awesome Steve, or various other things. The Whippet is Morgane. And someone referred to a Wolfhound with 30-something parents, one of whom has a blonde ponytail. Is there another Wolfhound in the Slope? 'Cause we're 30-something, and I sometimes have a ponytail, but it's black.
And, uh, the dogs have a blog. http://blogs.dogshowusa.com/ -

Oh - and that's sure not Mordred, our Irish Wolfhound in that pic, though the coloring is similar. His snout is much shorter and more blunt than that. That looks much more like a Deerhound to me.

Sorry to disappoint you Kitty - my sightings haven't been in that particular area, and neither the woman nor the man who I have seen walking the dogs as well as entering and exiting their abode avec les chiens sound anything like you or your boyfriend. And the second dog is not a fawn and white whippet.
Though I'd love to see what your dog looks like to see the difference...and isn't it hard having such a big dog in the slope? -
I would LOVE to meet the other IW folks. We could stage our own parade.
Big dog here is not really a problem. My boyfriend and I were lucky enough to find a nice, wide duplex to rent, and it's got a bit of a backyard, too. Also, we live on 9th St. which seems to have wider sidewalks than most of the numbered streets, so Mordred can always be corralled out of the way should someone/something with wheels go by (freaks him out, but not NEARLY as badly as did the precinct horses near where he used to live in Chelsea). He spends weekends upstate in a big ol' restored Gothic church, and, as he's getting toward being an elder statesman so far as the Irish Wolfhounds go (he'll be 6 this year), he's a bit more concerned with couch time (I'm sharing one with him as I type this) than major strolls anyhow. Still, with walking duties split amongst my boyfriend, our charming dog walker, and me, Mordred clocks a good 90 minutes or more a day with the outdoor romps. He seems pretty happy with his life.
If you see us out, say howdy! -

maybe you could stage an intervention for the less conscientious enthusiasts of the breed . . .

Subject: RE: Terry the Bad Dog
I used to live in Park Slope and I suspect this same dog bit my dog, a very friendly and submissive Springer Spaniel. The owners seem to match up--a rather submissive and kind wife who apologized repeatedly for her dog's attack and an asshole husband who yelled and screamed and dragged his wife and the dogs away. I wracked up a huge vet bill because the other dog basically pulled his "knee" out of it's socket. He still has trouble with that leg more than three years later. The jerks refused to talk about compensation when I saw them again, even though many people in the park said this dog has bit many other dogs. -
OK folks, I love you all so I'm going to try to help you out.
These 2 idiots and their dog are getting a free ride because nobody wants to 1) assault them or 2) complain to the authorities about this animal for fear that it will cause some sort of massive backlash that will result in the dog area being shut down.
Ok, I can see why 1 could be a problem. Nobody wants potential jail time over something like this, and even if you could bait lawyer man into moving first it would still be a pain in the neck to sort the whole thing out. So scratch that.
SO unless somebody wants to do something crazy like slip Terry some meat with a little POISON on it (not recommended) you all really need to hop on 311 and get the authorities involved. I don't know what - if anything - they will do, but I very much doubt that they will shut the whole dog run down because a few complaints about a specific animal.
I mean there are other options - a lawsuit, get Terry on video, flyers, my T-shirt idea - but I would go with 311 first. Sorry for the rant, but this guy is basically getting away with his nonsense because people seem to be finding excuses to avoid taking any real action. Get mad. -
Well, I take my dogs to the park once a week (I try anyway) but I have never seen Terry or his owners, as far as I know, so I think it would be kind of silly for me to "hop on 311."
I generally try to keep my dogs moving and minimize interaction with other dogs, because though most of the dogs are okay, there are too many crazy people, and there is often someone who will start screaming if my dog humps their dog (one of my dogs is a manic humper  ). There are too many people there who either know nothing about normal dog behavior and freak out over stupid things, and/or who cannot control their dogs at all.
Someone was telling me this morning that the horseback riders have been raising a stink about off-leash dogs. If the FIDO people are correct, there is an over-present danger that off-leash privileges will be taken away. -
I'm not saying anyone without a problem should make something up and call 311.
The horse thing is a different issue. I don't know the situation, frankly. Are dogs bothering the horses or are the horse people just complaining to amuse themselves?
We are pretty much talking about one specific dog and one specific set of owners that a lot of people have had problems with - and I promise you they don't all post here. The fear that off-leash privileges will be revoked if someone inquires as to what might be done seems unreasonable. -
Drano wrote:
Apparently off-leash dogs are bothering horses on the bridle path, where it runs alongside the baseball area going toward the riding ring. So that is probably a legitimate complaint.

I ended up filing a report with Sgt Johnson at the Brooklyn Parks Enforcement Patrol Office. 718 437-1351
I asked permission to post their number here, although you can also get them (eventually, if you're lucky :? ) by calling 311.
I think they are pretty clear about the difference between a problem with an individual dog, and off-leash hours in general. I think we'd all do better to help them keep track of real problems, so please call if you are involved in a serious dog bite. The more specific info you have, the better. Treat it like a car accident and exchange info! -

I think the Prospect Park off leash thing was ill considered from the gitgo. I have a dog, and I wouldn't DREAM of bringing my dog to those off leash hours.
You can never tell who or what might be at that park. What about the Central Park off leash dog who ate the voodoo tongue filled with pins? If he had been on a leash, he wouldn't have eaten that tongue. His owner would have saved big bucks in vet bills! I've found plenty of "alternative religion" offerings in Prospect Park as well! It's just common sense to keep a dog on a leash if you want to keep it safe from harm.
Responsible dog owners do not bring their cherished animals to run loose, with hundreds of offleash dogs, in Prospect Park at 8 am on Saturdays. It's sheer lunacy. -

Nonsense. Thousands of dogs enjoy offleash. Some of the owners are lunatics, but the dogs are alright

Subject: Dog Toys in Prospect Park
Can we please start a new rule for prosepct park off-leash hours? Don't bring toys to the park during off-leash hours or if you must please go to one of the many areas where the dogs are not playing. I have seen so many fights occur as a result of toys, especially those Cuz squeaky balls. There are plenty of things for the dogs to do during off leash hours besides play with there toys. Leave them at home. -

Very sensible suggestion, but there are too many banana-heads out there who just don't give a fig, like, say, Terry's owners. As far as bites and fights go, I recently started going to the park during off-leash hours and I'm amazed there isn't more trouble with that stuff - or maybe there is and people keep it quiet. I've seen a couple pretty good tilts with nary a hose in sight to turn on the beasts... -
this banana head brought his dog's Cuz to the park once
and she got mugged for her Cuz
i don't bring it any more
it's true, those things are dangerous -
I've been getting a lot of heat (but also support) for publicizing my weblog on these boards. Over the last 14 years I've seen the unleashed dogs in Prospect Park go from a few dozen to a few hundred. Somedays it's even more. A large number of dog owners completely disregard the "legal" hours and locations.
I am one of 8 children and, over the years, we've had 4 dogs, 6 cats, gerbils, birds, turtles, etc. My mother and 6 of my siblings still have dogs. I love dogs. I don't like irresponsible pet owners. My point is, I don't see off-leash courtesy hours as being good for animals or people. To that end I've done considerable research regarding laws, local government, animal advocacy groups, articles from reputable sources, photographs and put them together on a single weblog:
http://brooklynparks.blogspot.com
My "opinion" is backed up by the ASPCA, the Humane Society, the AKC, the Center for Disease Control and other, unbiased sources. -

Q, if I'm readin' you correct-like you're saying you got mugged for a Cuz ball? Damn...
and she got mugged for her Cuz
i don't bring it any more
it's true, those things are dangerous
EDIT: Now I read it again and it looks like your dog got attacked...what's in those balls, dognip?
