Brooklyn Kitchen and Baths?? Yay or Nay?
We were recommended to talk to Brian at Brooklyn Kitchen and Baths on 5th ave and Garfield and had (what seemed like) a great talk. We'd been to IKEA and Home Depot and felt like this guy could really help us out (we have our own contractor.)
Then I googled it and it came up with the WORST reviews!
http://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&rls=en-us&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=brooklyn+kitchen+and+baths&fb=1&split=1&gl=us&view=text&latlng=16286849387080733241&dtab=2&pcsi=16286849387080733241,1&ei=gzwISrjvGMektwfkw62LBw&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=result&resnum=1
Anyone have any additional thoughts?
Many thanks!

NAY NAY NAY!!
I HAVE HEARD HORROR STORIES ABOUT THEM -
such as?????????
the more information we can get the better! -
They used to be called Garfield Kitchen and Bath. My sense is they changed their name due to a bad reputation.
Do a search on that name and you'll get a lot of info. -
Well, all of what I have heard is from reading threads on PSP and my downstairs neighbors. Most of what I can remember is them ordering things that never ever come in or come in incorrectly or broken, wrong colors, items, etc. And then taking months, literally months for the correct items to come in, etc. etc.
Even just recently my downstairs neighbor ordered some bathroom tile from them, they told her one price, told her son a different price and in the end, charged them something different from what they told both of them! And, did not order the correct amount of tile so neighbor had to go get more tile some place else, the whole time they were insisting that neighbor had placed the wrong order.
the threads that were on PSP a while back went into more detail, people who had to delay renovation of their entire kitchens by 4,5, even 6 months due to f ups by these people.
I mean, you see the reviews on Google, so, you know -

Was just coming back to mention this.

they took our money and did not deliver the things we ordered. they made my life a living hell. my contractor offered to go down there with a baseball bat. Brian talks a great game, they have beautful things in the showroom, but there was not an area of things we ordered (tub, hardware, cabinetry for the bathroom) that was not a clusterf*ck.
pm me if you want more details. my recommendation is to run, not walk, away. -
I have a good friend who used them and said that they were a complete disaster. Avoid at all costs.

We had a good experience with the place on 5th and 18th, I can't remember the name, when we redid our bathroom a few years ago. The guys who work there were very knowledgeable, a few of them were plumbers, and they delivered on time. They did make 1 mistake but it was minor. They don't do tile and stuff, just hardware.
-
do you have their name please?

Park Slope Plumbing Supply
601 5th Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11215
(718) 832-0400 -
thanks very much.
i just spoke with someone who said that it was predominately the contractor who was terrible... but i GREATLY appreciate all the feedback from you all!
keep them coming please!!! -
We went in once, at the beginning of our kitchen reno project. We met w/a designer who spent some significant time with us (but then again, we were about to drop some significant cash, so fair's fair). After that meeting, however, I read so many bad reviews (here and on Brownstoner) that we ended up going with Lowe's and had a great experience.
-
We purchased new bathroom cabinetry (below sink and above) from Garfield Kitchen about 7 or 8 years ago. It worked out ok (after a few minor glitches). We used the contractor they recommended, and were quite pleased with his work.
A few years later, we completely tore out and replaced our kitchen. We purchased all of our cabinets from Tara Andersen of Bay Ridge Window and Door. She did a marvelous job of measuring everything and suggesting better ways to take advantage of the available space. Everything worked flawlessly. -
We did really well with them. We picked out a vanity, found it online cheaper, they matched the price and threw in the faucets half price.
-
ARG!
Just googled Bay Ridge Window and Door (which seems, from the website to only do windows and doors! but clearly, it must do more) and THEY had horrible reviews too!!!
Does anyone know if Garfield/aka Brooklyn Kitch&Bath changed owners as well as their name or just their name?
Must say that Brian is a VERY good salesman...
*grand sigh* -
Don't know who the owners are but Brian was there when it was Garfield. He was the fastest talking salesman I ever met. He was pressuring me to sign on the dotted line for a $40k project the first time I visited the store, even though I told him I was just starting my search.

that is Park Slope Plumbing Supply, they are good guys. i have bought my bathroom faucets from them and shower fixtures from them.. But, they do not sell tile and and kitchen cabinets, just bath stuff. A lot of plumbers use them -
thank you all so very much for your most valued posts!
Brian came over today and said he could save us $500-$600 if we ordered by tomorrow night which gave us an inordinate amount of pressure to make a decision.
He did continue to say (and he's very convincing, i must admit i felt very well 'taken care of') how much money he could save us which is very enticing (especially if you're counting your pennies) so we felt rather torn.
However, tomorrow we're going to go to Lowe's nad check out the Park Slope Plumbing Supply for our bathroom.
I feel so dirty. -
Call Bay Ridge... perhaps they've changed their focus, but I doubt it. We purchased a huge number of "Plain & Fancy" (that's the brand name) cabinets from them. Tara was an absolute pleasure to deal with. The best part: no salesmanship!! (I detest being pressured to buy anything at all)

I went to Garfield / Brooklyn Kitchen & Bath about three years ago when we decided to renovate two bathrooms, and had a very bad experience. Walked in and asked woman at desk if someone could help me, as I needed to order bathtub, shower, vanity, etc. She pointed me to a guy sitting opposite her at a desk, who began asking me in a confrontational manner (without getting up from his chair) what size bathtub, etc., and hassling me because I wanted a non-standard size. I finally said, “You know, I’m looking to spend a lot of money here, and you’re not treating me very nice.” It went downhill from there, morphed into a swearing match, and I ended up walking out. I don’t think I’ve ever been treated as poorly in any store.
We ended up going to A&K Tile on 9th Street, and they were wonderful – got all tiles, bathtub, shower fixtures, glass doors, etc. there. Very helpful. -
just went to park slope plumbing supply and the kitchen place across the street and they were wonderful!
no 'if you buy by yesterday i'll give you a deal,' no pushing, very easy and competitively priced.
also went to the tile place on 9th and they were great too.
thank you brooklynian!!!!!!! -
Seems this store is still upsetting folk.

Wow.. the down on his luck is a lame excuse.
-
thanks for that link!
yep, he even came to our house and said we'd 'get a great deal' if we could pay upfront...
how he has stayed this long is beyond me.
at least his past is finally (hopefully) catching up with him.
let everyone else be forewarned! -
this weekend, this place had sticker that it had been 'seized by a Marshal and in possession of the landlord.'
there was also a black spraypaint streak on the window and the deadbolt had been spraypainted, and one of the windows was broken. -
Check out three places:
Modern Kitchen and Baths @ 250 44th Street, Brooklyn - (718) 439-6888, this would be for cabinets, med cabinets and sinks and water fixtures if you decide to go with them on all. They will come and measure and give you a layout.
Park Slope Plumbing on 5th Ave by Prospect Ave. They have tons of fixtures and sinks (via catalogues), they also have a cabinet division across the street. They will also measure and draw up plans.
Nemo Tiles on 48 East 21st Street New York, NY 10010 212.505.0009. These guys have a whole range of excellent tile in style and price. I think you have to give them the measurements yourself, but they will work on design/mix-match
Country Floors on 15 East 16th Street
New York, NY 10003 (212) 627-8300 between Union Sq & 5th Ave. A smaller selection, the majority at least $12 a Sq ft, however, they have very nice standard tile at standard prices as well. They can be a bit snooty, but they are good. They also have warehouse sales.
I have gone the Lowes and Home Depot route. Abysmal. The cabinets are pricey and not well made. They seem to only sell Kohler, Price Phister and Moen fixtures which will last four years if you're lucky. Their Delta fixtures aren't that great either, you're better off getting Delta from Park Slope Plumbing. -
We did not have any problems with them when we odered stuff for a bathroom a few years ago.
-
They are done. Finished. Kaput.
-
i KNOW!
we just walked by during the street fair and saw it was no more... wonder what finally did it...
Howdy, Stranger!
