Subject: Park Slope backlash - was "the hat"

I am kind of amused on all the recent press and blog activity on our
hat "scandal." I am a firm believer that there is no such thing as
bad press. In fact, I think people who have bitchy things to say
about Park Slope are probably jealous... especially all those people
who are dissing PS on a regular basis on thedailyheights blog! I live in Prospect Heights, and that blog is embarassing! I've never
encountered so many people in one place who take themselves so
seriously!

Whew! glad I got that off my chest.

Amy, who has been attacked on this very news group but that's part of
the fun.

  • Aaaand now I have even further justification for having gotten sick of Park Slope and leaving after three years...
  • certainly nothing about that hat incident indicated that, just maybe, a few people on the other side of flatbush take themselves a wee bit seriously.
  • Er, how could I be "jealous" of Park Slope when I lived there for 6 years? Whatever, lady.
  • I was more ashamed than anything. We're a laughingstock - but at least we've established - what? - that girls can wear hats with triangles? I'm not sure...

Oh my god this is fucking awesome. I love how stupid Park Slope is, which is why I live on PPW and 5th, just to be in the middle of it all! I'll be the first to make fun of the place, and laugh at myself. So I guess I must be taking myself too seriously, and I'm jealous! Hehehe

And I agree with Sweet Tea, the overly serious people were the people writing about that damn hat thing in the first place. I had a blog mocking it a while ago, and everyone was laughing their heads off about the stupidity of Park Slope residents.
Seriously, to get so worked up about a fucking hat! ahhhahahaha.

I want to make love to the person who made the fake Lost Boy Hat poster and put it up around the neighborhood. Probably someone from PH since only a handful of us in PS actually have a funny bone, or a pulse!

Best to not be ashamed but to laugh with the people laughing at us. I think all the PS shops should start selling that hat as a novelty. I'd buy one!

Indications you may not be indie #217,

"The word indie, in some form, appears in your email address."

This is why I have a love/hate relationship with PS. I love the place - I really do. However; some of its residents need some serious lightening up. :)
  • tis tru iz jealous of ps :(. i wish i had money to burn and over pay for rent and food and everything else in life!
  • I'm not jealous of PS, I've lived here for 11 years. Sad about it's evolution, but will miss it like hell (especially being a block from the Park) when my idiosyncratic landlord exercises his right under NYC rent laws to evict my ass so his lame-brained son can live in MY apartment.

This 750 sq ft first floor apartment (in a five story building with 15 units) with 12 foot ceiling, hardwood floors, a real, large, working, wood-burning fireplace, with separate dining (with chandelier) and living rooms and a full bedroom currently rents for $1143/month!!

So when some of us bitch about that "G" word - it's because when shit happens we probably can't live here any longer.

I took a walk through PH over the weekend and liked what I saw - so maybe some how, some way, we can afford to live there with only a 50% increase in rent instead of the 100% it would take to stay in the "real" PS, not that fucking part that used to be Windsor Terrace.

NYC of the future - not for the feint of heart or wallet!
  • The woman is an ass, and "they hate me because they're jealous" is one of those things that is pretty much never true, even though I guess it's soothing to the ego to believe it.

But it's not right to post her email address.

You know what Rose - you are right about 2 things. That lady IS an ass, and it is not right to post her e-mail address. I've deleted it. Muk should edit his comments or the Admin should do it too.

That's a rule on that board that everyone's email and name is revealed on every post...fallout from a lawsuit over there last year.

Ha! Damn property owner! You shoulda done the rent-with-an-option-to-buy thing.

I wasn't literally ashamed about the hat "scandal", and it did provide some good yucks. Another benefit - a good friend lives in San Francisco and we often compare the moonbat goings-on in our communities in a sort of friendly competition. By his own admission, this will be tough to beat.
  • I agree. Looks like someone beat me to it...

  • Have you guys ever looked at MySpace? Her comment has a real UR JUST JELLUS!!1!!!11!! vibe to it, no?
  • That original post was dumb, but ( and now I prepare to get lynched..)
alot of what the PH people can and do enjoy IS IN PS. Correct me if I'm wrong but the actual boundry of PH is Vanderbuilt ( which has been discussed too many times by people that think the boundry was creeping into CH territory). Well, no "mighty meat wind" no Taro, no Mooney's or OConners, no Geido, Al Di La. All in PS!!!
I'm not trying to push the buttons of most of the PH posters, only the ones who constantly rag on PS and then enjoy it's many amenities. I wish I had half the places the PH has, so I am admittedly jealous of both.
So they have too many strollers, so don't eat at their establishments if that isn't your thing.
  • i always thought flatbush was the boundary --- the railroad tracks, if you will -- of park slope / prospect heights... So since I live between carlton and vanderbilt -- I live in park slope?!?!
  • I always thought Flatbush was the border also. As far as shopping in Prospect Heights, just look around Vanderbilt avenue. In between the clothing stores and places like Beast and Soda Prospect heights will give park Slope a run for it's money in no time.
  • yes, the border is flatbush. just as I'm on the eastern border of PH on my side of washington, the eastern side of flatbush is PH. therefore, geido, carneviento and mooney's are all PH. franny's claims PS, but they LIE.
  • Sorry if it seemed like i was trying to "draw a line in the sand", it just seems that there are quite a few "hardcore PH'ers" that really love what Park Slope has to offer, but then rag on it. Enjoy it. Read alot of the PH posts about food and bars, and delivery places, a significant amount of them are about places that are in PS proper. I'm not saying that everyone is jealous of PS, but alot of what it has to offer is nice.
  • OMG! Saved from a life in PH! Inexplicably my landlord just sent lease renewal forms  Two more years at least a block from the Park :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
  • amusingly, I rarely "take advantage" of PS. all the places I order from are in PH or CH, I do all of my non-FD grocery shopping in PH. catching me on Flatbush is rare - crossing Flatbush? please!
and part of why I'm like that is b.c. of a lot of what gets complained about on the boards - every other time I'm at a meal in PS, there's some kid squalling. if I decide to walk to gorilla for coffee on a saturday, I'm dodging strollers and dogs. bleh. PS isn't worth the stress - sometimes it makes me think of times square or canal street tourists trying to buy knockoffs - too many idiots.
  • when we moved here, i thought we'd go to PS all the time, but actually, it's faster for us to go into manhattan.

anyway, i don't think that enjoying a chuckle over the hat incident is the same thing as hating the whole neighborhood. some things about the place ARE ridiculous, even as some other things are lovely.
  • Frankly, it was a toss-up for me...PS or PH?

But then a charming gentleman lectured me on the benefits of proximity to The Park Slope Food Co-op, and my decision went from difficult to no-brainer in a mere 2.5 hours.
  • I lived in PS for a couple years before buying over here in PH a couple years back. A good friend iof mine and a long PSer referred to my move to the "other side" of Flatbush to moving "off campus."

Hey that's great news! Nice to be seeing you'll be sticking around!

kosherdave - thank you so much! My wife and I are still jumping for joy - we've been living with the landlords sword of Damocles hanging over our necks for about 9 months! Guess his 20-yr-old single son changed his mind.

Our dogs are actually happier then we are of course

Bicycles make the trip to the Co-op much simpler. Takes just one good bike, one enormous messenger bag, strong legs, and five minutes. Easy as pie.

As nice as the Co-op is, I would never allow myself to live in Park Slope just to be close to it. ::shudder:: The whole "indiemom" bit is emblematic of the whole problem...
  • Livetotravel wrote: Guess his 20-yr-old single son changed his mind.
So what was the deal with the landlord? Can he really evict you so his son could have the place? Was it a matter of just not allowing you to renew your lease? Is it that easy for them to kick people out? Man that sucks.
