Nethermead off-leash hrs? (In practice if not by law)
Comments
-
The cops now regularly ticket. They drive around in an unmarked SUV. ...which, of course, all the regular dog walkers look for.
-
so....there are still regular dogwalkers despite this vehicle? i mean regular dog-offleashers in the nethermead from 6 PM onward?
-
If you don't get a ticket you might wind up on a Blog

there are, and now a crazy guy posts us on blogs. It's great.
P.S. A $100 ticket is a joke. -
You take your chances and you get your tickie.. though not every time. My husband just took the dogs to the park. I told him to keep them on leash. He won't No one else in the Nevermead will either. I have strong opinions on this... Off leash hours were hard won. Too bad the 5(or was it 6 start in the evening) was taken away a year or two ago but that is the law now and dog owners who violate it are playing to the possibility that there will be NO off leash hours in the future!. If I take the dogs to the park at this hour they stay on leash.
Your call. -
Jeepers, Winstonsmith, don't you get tired of beating this drum? I wasn't asking if I'd end up on a blog and I wasn't asking for implied criticism of my forthcoming illegal act, should I decide to take my dog up to the park offleash today. Hasn't anyone ever suggested that if you don't have anything relevant to say, it's better to say nothing at all?
Veets, thanks for the warning. I'll probably keep him on leash, given what you said. -

Thanks, I might be bring my children to the park later and I am grateful to have one less off leash dog.

Yep, yep. Tickets are being handed out. I know some folks who were lucky enough to get them! The fact that so many people, despite getting tickets (which escalate in cost as you get more) still go out says to me that we need some evening off leash for the dogs (before the sun sets), esp for folks that head off to work before there are enough dogs for good play in the morning.
lnelson, I pm'd you with some details I've gathered from getting to spend lots of time in the park and knowing lots of other dog owners.
Oh, and the rebuttal blog to the that poor obsessed guy's blog (comments are not censored on this one) since someone posted a link to that one:

WOW Winston!! You must have a lot of spare time on your hands. All those poop pix and constant writing about evil doggies in da hood.... do you have a following? Maybe a place where we can all meet and worship pooper scoopers? LOL
-
Winstonsmith- I just read your blog... do you really have nothing better to do with your life than walk around and take pictures of poop?! Theres no argument that people should pick it up, but jesus. And I mean seriously (from the blog): "Rright outside the school. Even if the owner cleaned it up that would have been nasty. The smell would have gone into the windows."
That specific poop is obviously from a small dog or a puppy- do you expect someone to A) drag their 4lb dog a block (which is a long way for those small legs) to poop away from a school (but in front of another business) or
have all dogs be curb trained from birth?
get a grip. It should have been picked up but implying that the "smell" is so bad that it would somehow taint the schoolchildren is just ridiculous. -
Carmen-- don't you understand that the children will be scarred for life if they see, or heaven forbid, smell dog poop!!!
Now I know why I am as messed up as I am....I grew up in Brooklyn before pooper scooper laws and dogs were off the lease all the time. I would never have waisted all that time blaming my mom if I had realized this sooner....
Thank you Winstonsmith... You are my hero!!! -
And yet when you see people with their dogs running free and their kids on a leash, you have to chuckle.

I just said it is nasty. and yes I do expect someone to take their pet further from a school. If they would have cleaned it up, I would have no complaint. -

I do not think doggies are evil. I think some dog owners are selfish. I am just holding up a mirror. -
This thread is majorly derailed...and really entertaining me for some reason. hahaha.
The only people who are going to look at a blog full of poop picks (that's what it is right?) are people who are overly obsessed with that one little problem. It's gross, but what is the purpose of the blog? To further irritate those who are already excessively annoyed? Do you want cops wasting time sneaking around policing this? I sure as hell don't; they should be dealing with much bigger problems and if you are not aware of these problems, you live in a lovely bubble. If you want to carry some bags and give them to people who don't pick up, go for it. I for one always have extra bags ready for those in need, whether they want it or not.
Yes, people who don't pick up their dog's poop suck, just like people who park in the bike lanes and crosswalks, all the people who trash the park (literally) on the weekends in nice weather, etc. suck. It's not news. -
Winstonsmith, don't be ridiculous. You're holding up a picture of poop, and people are telling you to get over it.

Aren't there any dog runs around here? When I lived in the city there were several. The were fenced in areas and dogs could run free and hang out with other dogs and humans
-
There are some, but they are few and far between and most are really small. A purse size dog could run in them, but bigger dogs can't actually get up to running speed. Plus they tend to have kids in them, and I personally won't go in if there are small kids running around b/c there is always drama with that (even though rules usually include one about no kids). There are many more playgrounds for kids around than dog runs.
-
Too bad, because it seems that if there were something accommodating enough it would work for everyone

I agree, there should be drama if a parent lets their kid in a dog run.
Buy why are you comparing the number of playground for kids for the number of dog runs? -

It's very simple. There are tons of playgrounds for kids to play in, they should go play in one of them and stay out of the dog runs. -

Yes, I agree. Just for a second i thought OpossumQueen was saying that playgrounds should be replaced by dog runs. -
I think the ticketing is getting worse because the city needs money, so I would be careful about ignoring leash laws unless you have money to spare. Plus, there are some nuts who have nothing better to do with their time than squeal on people and take pictures. BTW, I think these people have deep psych issues that they are projecting/transferring onto dog poop!

Blame it on the economy and and too many people with too much free time on their hands -
While I think the jerk who's taking videos of people is a freakin' nutjob, I cannot understand why people feel the need to break the leash law. It ruins it for all dog owners if the law is repealed and we have NO off leash hours due to a select few who choose to ignore it.
I also think that a park as large as Prospect should have a dedicated dog run and it shouldn't take an act of Congress to get one built.
A couple of years ago a group of boxer owners had a meet up at a park in Queens (can't remember the name of it). It was a lovely dog run with a special area dedicated to small breeds and a larger area for the big guys. They had landscaped all around it with pretty flowers and plants. From what I understand, the users of the park kept the gardening up and pretty much maintained it themselves.
This comment isn't aimed at anyone in particular but if you're unhappy with the current laws we have, we have to change them, not just disregard them. -
Yes, there should be a dog run in Prospect Park. Has anyone tried to create one? If so, why didn't it happen?
-

Probably because you have to have a 50 million signature petition, sanction from the Pope, proof that you've had seven miracles attributed to yourself and are a bona fide Saint and don't actually own a dog. -
try praying to Saint Bernard.

Edit: Nevermind...I was incorrect....
