Where can I donate items (i.e. not clothes)? — Brooklynian

Where can I donate items (i.e. not clothes)?

I have all this stuff - dishes, vases, misc. - that is in good condition but unlikely to be bought at a stoop sale and isn't worth the hassle of Craigslisting individually. I'd like to donate it, but I don't want to go to the ends of the earth. Is there a place nearby, preferably with parking, that will take donated items? By nearby I mean nearby, definitely in this borough. Sunset Park, Park Slope, Prospect Heights...?

  • The Salvation Army has a pick-up service but you've got to have a certain amount of stuff for them to make the trip. I think 3-4 boxes, pieces of furniture or electronics like TVs.
  • You can probably get away with selling more stuff than you think at a stoop sale. I've seen a lot of mediocre dishes and vases and stuff out there. Price it low enough and someone is bound to bite. If you don't mind hauling it up to where you decided to have the sale, I say give it a shot.

You could also try just making one big freecycle post about the stuff. And if there is a freecycle event before the big move you can definitely just haul it all up there and people will take it. I was amazed at how quickly people took stuff that looked even semi-functional.
