Verizon or ATT how is the signal? — Brooklynian

Verizon or ATT how is the signal?

sugarpet
edited November -1 in Park Slope
I am looking to change my mobile service to either Verizon or AT&T. If anyone has any of the 2 would you let me know how the service is?
I had Verizon a few years back and I had a terrible signal in the area, how is it now?
Thanks

  • I've had both. It depends on where you travel.

Verizon has the best coverage in the tri-state area. AT&T has the best national coverage. I've worked for some very large companies and all of the people in procurement say the same thing.

Either way, I think you'll be fine in this area. The one to watch is T-Mo, which has a huge dead spot on 5th Ave near 12th street (ironically, right near their store)
  • i have a verizon work blackberry and a t-mo personal one. work calls/emails never fail to find me, whereas there are a number of spots in the boroughs where the t-mo service is dead and the phone switches to sos on verizon or att. specifically, the area flexi mentioned in ps and one i discovered today in dumbo.
  • From what I've heard, Verizon is the best. I have AT&T (I stupidly locked myself into a multi-year contract) and my house is a dead zone! It works OK in other places and it's fine for travel but it sucks that I get can't rely on my cellphone in my own house! I laugh bitterly at those AT&T ads claiming to have the fewest dropped signals. My friends who swear by Verizon are trying to get me to switch and I will once my contract runs out, probably in the year 2030.
  • I've always had Verizon so I can't really compare but have no problems. Though people that have data plans tell me that the Verizon 3G network has better coverage than the AT&T 3G network. Can anyone confirm this?

The only thing about Verizon is all users have to manually update the software (the PRL or roaming list) themselves. It's just dialing *228 option 2 and waiting a minute while it updates. BUt it is the only way for the phone to know about new cell sites.

Of course if you want and iPhone.....

In any event I only get 1 year contracts so I can get a new phone if I need one sooner.

Also many employers make a discount for AT&T and Verizon available, usually around 20% of the plan
  • A vote for Verizon. I travel all the time and always get a strong voice signal. More than that, I use the phone as a 3G modem and that's just about always good as well.
  • I have AT&T. It's fine, however, I do drop a lot of calls when in the park.
  • I have AT&T and had T-Mobile. I've had no problems with either of them. I can't speak for Verizon but everyone I know who has them loves them.
  • Verizon has better coverage in NYC, hands down. I switched from Verizon to ATT for work and it might actually be the worst decision I've ever made.

Verizon sounded pretty clear just about anywhere I went. Often times with ATT there is a lot of static or line noise. Coverage in my apartment is almost nil, whereas Verizon was just about perfect.

I'd say I get at least 2 dropped or failed calls a day as well.

I make a lot of calls for work, and am frustered by ATT daily. I'm not a shill for Verizon, I just miss the service they provided.
  • I live in south slope, but walk/drive all over Brooklyn.. I have Verizon, and i'm really happy with it... my GF has AT&T and gets dropped calls all the time for some reason
  • a little off the query posed, but whatever you do do not get sprint. horrible, horrible coverage. drop city.
  • I'm ion 5th Street. I had T-Mobile and could not get ANY signal inside my house or on my street. I had to go around the corner and over by Puppetworks before a signal kicked in. I got an iPhone and I am over the moon at how wonderful AT&T is by comparison. I can get calls in my house! I can get calls on the street!

But you see how my expectations were really low.
  • Lo Kee, I've had the opposite experience with Sprint. I never have dropped calls, and have fine reception everywhere outside and anywhere inside so long as there is a nearby window.

In addition, because they lost so many customers following the sprint/nextel merger, they have completely changed their corporate attitude towards customer service. Now, the customer is almost always right... it's remarkably refreshing.

Second this: it is exactly what I have heard/experienced.

Yes but what do you have to do to get a phone fixed? Can you walk into any store like yo can with Verizon? My first phone was Sprint and there was only 1 place in the city to go and get a phone fixed near 42nd St and 6th Ave, It was a real PITA. With Verizon all stores have a customer service counter and they can fix a phone there.
  • I have had Sprint for 9 years now and I love it. never have dropped calls, i get service everywhere, even places people with TMobile and AT&T don't get service. I have a very good plan and I get a $150 credit every single year towards a new phone if I so choose.

As for being able to walk in anywhere to get a phone fixed, i guess I have never had to have a phone fixed that often, so, that doesn't matter to me. I know there are 2 places in Brooklyn that repair phones, the Sprint center in Bay Ridge and the one in downtown Brooklyn. But, luckily for me, only one time I had a phone that was still under warranty that had to be repaired.

Oh, and I get perfect service inside my house too, I don't live that far from booklaw actually, LOL

Hubby has TMobile and he does not get service inside the house or various places right on our block. But, he doesn't care that much because e uses his phone mainly all over Manhattan where it works great and he has an excellent deal with them. But, I have heard other people with TMobile in Park Slope complain about poor service as well.
  • i have had verizon in the past (up until last year) and never experienced black zones or dropped calls in the greater nyc, brooklyn, queens area. i recently switched to AT&T for the iphone and receive sporadic dead zones and dropped calls frequently. i love the iphone but AT&T's NYC coverage is pale in comparison to verizon's. if the iphone does come out on verizon i will be switching right back.
