  • before I get carried away I want to see how bad the serve on the line gets due to the Culver Viaduct rehab. This will be a long work period.

    You know the G train extension is not because we wanted it its because the Culver Viaduct is going to be so under construction that the G can't turn around there. It's for the MTA's convenience, not the riders.

    And yea, bring the V to Brooklyn

    It would terminate where the F does but it would run express from the city and relieve the congestion on the F.

    I think the fact that the G has to make a "u-turn" in the middle of the line, gets in the way of regular use of the express track.

    there is no use the express track except for the G to turn around and begin it's trip to queens. express f service didnt last very long due to rider disapproval (mta listened?!?). terminating the V at Coney Island would not be worth it as it. it's intended to relieve congestion on the F in Manhattan but how often is a V train packed?

    When was there official F express service? Can you cite a report that actually said there was rider disapproval?

    A better question is how often is the F packed and how would extending the V to Brooklyn change it.

    There was express F service from the mid-60's until the mid-70's. It was not well implemented because, IIRC, during rush hours all F's ran express between Church & Bergen (& alternate F's express 18th Ave - Kings Highway), so the G provided the only local service. This especially annoyed passengers at Carroll St, who would have to ride the G one stop, then change for an F at the Bergen lower level (which is now closed). One of the proposals I read calls for the the V to run express to Church Ave. the F & G would provide local service, so this avoids the problems of the previous service.

    Would that proposal include rehabbing the lower level platforms at Bergen? I've always wanted to see that in action. Would the V be making the same local stops coming into Brooklyn that the F does entering Bergen?
  • If the V extension doesn't happen (and it probably won't), then they should run the G express all the way from Bergen to Stillwell. That way, local-stop customers retain the direct Manhattan access, and people on express stops can opt to take the express and transfer (which many already would do anyway, to take the A), or wait for the local and have a one-seat ride. This scenario would only improve service, and wouldn't take away any convenience that already exists.

    I would agree with that as long as 4th Ave were a local stop. Adding that connection to the 4th Ave BMT is going to be a huge thing for riders of that and the IND Crosstown line.
