What the hell is going on around here? — Brooklynian

What the hell is going on around here?

What's with all the new boards? Every new board has been specifically requested by a DH/Brooklynian user. It takes literally 3 seconds to set up a new board, so it really hurts no one to do it.

Is this a desperate attempt to shore up waning popularity? No, contrary to what Alex says, our page views and visitorship are both pretty much higher than ever.

Why Brooklynian.com? DH is at a critical juncture, and we have two choices right now:

(A) turn this into an entirely self-sustaining, self-growing community, or
(B) shut down the boards completely.

By expanding the focus to Brooklyn at large, we could substantially increase the chances that the boards can survive in their present state. We will work hard to make sure that DailyHeights will not lose its identity in all this change.

What about money? Those who have heard the backstory know: these boards/blogs started out as a modest experiment in community and "ultra local" journalism. All the "earnings" been accidental. A lot of people have spontaneously donated money. People have said, "hey, you can make money simply by giving up some of your page to ad space." That turns out to be true. Money is certainly not the motivation for all the work that goes into these boards. But again, if the critical mass increases, then it may be possible for people to actually make money from providing this free, community supported website.

Comments

  • I remember back before all these new boards moved in, we had a community wiki where all the pages linked to each other.

    CONSIDER YOURSELF TECHNOGENTRICONFRONTED.
  • thanks a lot.

    technogentrifornication.
  • Seriously, though, did the wiki get axed in the shuffle of the dailyheights/brooklynian split, or am I just not looking in the right place?

I feel like the wiki has great potential as a community resource.
  • the wiki got corrupted by a perl upgrade on the part of our hosting provider. The database is still intact, but we need someone who can reinstall mediawiki and link the database to it. any ideas?

    At least it's not Californitechnogentrifornication.

a wiki would be really cool
one place to have all of our comments become a database

but i've never messed with setting one up :(
