HALP! One of my tomato plants is dying

I planted 2 in the same pot and quickly realized they were too crowded. I separated them on Thursday and now one looks all sad and droopy. I want him to live!

Suggestions? He has lots of water and is in the sun. I already gave him a kiss and a pep talk :(

  • Flexi-
Maybe its just stressed from the transplanting and needs to be sheltered from the sun and wind a bit until the roots are growing again. A little bonemeal might help the roots regrow too. Hope it makes it. We lost a few seedlings too if it makes you feel better to share the sadness.
  • Thanks, Flo -

He's looking much better this afternoon. I gave him some miracle grow, more soil, water and another pep talk...and another kiss..

I hope he makes it because I have never grown the golden tomatoes before
  • I don't know if this actually helps but my dad, a prize tomato grower, said the art of growing tomatoes is consistency. If they get an erratic amount of water ( especially in the summer where there is rain and extreme dry) they grow a rapidly and then suddenly split from too much water. Steady consistent watering/ feed is key. They do generally like a lot of fertilizer and sun just keep their intake steady or they grow too fast and their skins split.
  • my father was an expert tomato grower too ..unfortunately i never paid enough attention (except to eat them) and he's dead now, so I can't ask him.

My tomato plant is looking much better today, so I think he will survive.

    I've never had a splitting problem...just squirrels :)
  • so flexi when can I come pick up my honorary batch of homegrown tomatoes?

in a few weeks, I think. Most of the plants already have flowers, which means tomatoes can't be too far behind.

When are you bringing that little Q-tip of yours over here?
  • You'd better be allergic to Bruno's kisses, too or Oscar will be VERY upset.
  • carmen - bring bruno over for a kiss test, please
  • fishheads make tomatoes grow like a horny teenager, fishmarkets will almost give them away, tuck them under the top layer of soil and water before bed.
  • ^your raccoon will thank you.

    that's raccoonS...plural....

I would think that the fish head would stank up the place too.

It doesn't look like I am going to need it after all as my pep talks and keeeeses seem to have done the trick and he's perking up almost back to normal now
  • Yay!! Now you can make us ketchup.
