Question about the movie "Gladiator" and the Oscar award it won? I found out that Gladiator won the "best picture" in 2000 Academy award, but it has received many B's as well as A's from critics according to Yahoo movies, and it also has only 77% on rottentomatoes.com, which isn't that high.

I guess the question is why did gladiator win best picture. The better question is why a beautiful mind won best picture the next year.

The nomines were for 2001:
Chocolat
Erin Brokovich
Gladiator
Traffic
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

I liked Gladiator and Crouching Tiger. Either one could of won.

Given the weak competition in 2002 I think they finally gave Opey an Oscar. Don't get me started on Ron Howard. His movies make Mayberry look like Shakespeare.
