  • Im going to put it out there for you, because it seems to be a little trend on this board to ask about "safety" in the guise of many other connotations. The area you are looking at is a lower middle class ethnic neighborhood, that is predominately West Indian and Black American. If that rubs against your "comfort level", then there you have your answer.

    OTHERWISE:

    a) its very residential, so plan to hike to shopping, since there are really no "big" stores or notable supermarkets in that area. You will find fruit markets and fish markets especially on Nostrand avenue. Some of my favorite beauty supply places are on Nostrand right off of president like, Bonafide.

    b) at night like most urban neighborhoods your area has streets where drugs are pushed. Stay away from Franklin avenue, particularly the subway stop 2/3/5/4 area. Franklin at night is like 3rd avenue in Gowanus and Sunset park at night, or like Greenwich avenue by Canal street in Manhattan at night: ie busy, with traffic, but sorta desolate with lots of people possibly selling drugs milling about. Now I won't lie you, your street gets pretty desolate fast after you leave nostrand, so that walk at night may be better taken with a companion.

    c) you area is near medgar evers a historically black college, make of that what you will. It is also near the bedford armory. Goggle search the bedford armory.

But I will say expect to see lots of "daytime" traffic/ people going into and and coming from your area.

IN SUMMATION: your area has a relatively short 30 to 45 minute commute to Manhattan, Good nighttime train service, Bad for grocery/clothing shopping, not much in the way of nightlife unless you want to try some of the small bars around there, but they cater to West Indians mostly. Stuff is CHEAP around there, because it's a low income area. I go there to buy my beauty supplies and household items on Nostrand which are even cheaper than going to the Target in downtown brooklyn
  • It's as safe as any place in Brooklyn. (FYI, Brooklyn is a safe place).
  • i agree with everything psycho-ologist said except to stay away from franklin ave and the 2/3/4/5 ... i have lived here for a few years and have never had a problem in that area and with the addition of franklin park and 95 south i think there are most "night time" pedestrians in the area. i think the only part of a night time walk home i would be slightly nervous about to where you're talking about is after you get off the 2/3/4/5 and you start walking on a side street (aka - after you get off franklin and start walking on president towards bedford/rogers) because it will be mostly residential and therefore not much foot traffic

Just as a point of information, Medgar Evers is not a HBCU, rather it is part of the City University system. Medgar was designed to appeal to caribbean and african americans living in the central Brooklyn area, but technically it is a predominantly minority school, not an HBCU.
