need free/low-cost neutering — Brooklynian

need free/low-cost neutering

I've been babysitting a friend's four(!) cats for the past month. They are a mom cat and her three 11-month old kittens, one male and two females. And they are not fixed. I about hit the roof when I found out, but as my friend was in the hospital AND being evicted, there was little I could do but take them in while explaining to her that these cats need to get fixed ASAP. Well, for one of the females, it was too late. She gave birth to a kitten on the ninth. (Mom and kitten are doing fine. I was about to go on a date when the kitten showed up. I'm sure "I can't go out, I've got kittens" is the most unusual excuse the guy has ever heard to get out of a date.)

Anyway, my friend and I have gone through a whole song and dance trying to arrange for the others to get neutered. Today, we finally got our act together and went to the Brooklyn ACC on Linden Blvd for the mobile ASPCA truck and the truck didn't show up! All the other times/dates/places are even less accessible than the Linden Blvd location, so I don't want to go to another location only to have them not show up again.

I've heard tell that there is a clinic in Park Slope that does free or low-cost neutering on Thursdays, but I can't figure out which one that is.

Any help would be appreciated. My friend doesn't have a lot of money so free or low-cost neutering is essential. I'm located in Crown Heights on the 3 line.

(BTW, I've decided to adopt the kitten. With only one kitten, it was a no-brainer.)

  • Muffin's Pet Connection offers low cost spay/neuter. You order a certificate and go to one of their participating vets. Muffins.org - #718-833-7988.
The Humane Soc. of NY offers very low cost spay/neuter - #212-752-4840.
Thanks for doing the right thing!!
  • I dont know about cats, but I'm planning on using a Muffins cert for my male dog to be neutered and it's going to end up being around $75 total including pain meds (prospect park animal clinic accepts the muffins certs and is very convenient to most of park slope.) My vet was going to charge me over $500. I'm almost 100% positive cats are cheaper. Its not free but its a hellofa lot cheaper than what "regular" vets would charge!
  • Srill, $75 for that little thing? Humane Society charges by weight for dogs, so your teeny dude would be a lot less, but I know you aren't a Manhattan gal.
  • Yeah $75 is sort of high but its literally right up the block- i dont know if I'd be comfortable bringing him home on the train coming out of anesthesia and stuff...
  • Well thanks for the muffin info. That was very helpful. To do the male and one female will cost $89, so we're going to do that. My friend wanted to do all the cats except the queen, but she's having issues with her arms so I had to lug two cats to East New York and back. I am exhausted. I was happy to find that my veternarian practice, Animal Kind, accepts the certificates, so we're going to go with them. Since I'm adopting the kitten and that's going to be her regular vet, it will give them more than the usual family history.

The other two cats will get fixed, but at a later date, and probably when they are no longer in my house.
  • An ASPCA truck is often stationed in Greenwood Heights some mornings on 6th Ave. between 23rd & 24th Streets. Not sure what days it is there but it seems to be about once or twice a week.
  • I can get you free slots for tomorrow in Park Slope. You will need to PM me before 3 PM today if you are interested.

I would highly discourage you for using Animal King for Muffins Certificates. They will require you to get additional stuff that you may not be prepared to pay for (IV fluids, FVRCP vaccine, Rabies vaccine). These services add up quickly. They make it mandatory for you to get these services. Although they are good to get - spaying/neutering is the most important thing right now. I would opt for Prospect Park Veterinary Clinic or Pet Haven instead for a Muffins Certificate.

The Humane Society does an excellent and they charge around $55 for females and $35 for males. There are no hidden additional charges. This would be my first choice and it's no problem getting appointments during the week.
  • I've used the Humane Society on the upper east side, are there other locations (say, in Brooklyn)?

Unfortunately the only location is in Manhattan:

    161 E. 59th
    NY, NY

    It's worth the trek.
  • So I just picked up my critter from Prospect Park Animal Clinic (6th st and PPW) after using a muffins cert to get him neutered. He's actin'a'fool but seems no worse for wear and the whole thing cost me $52 for the cert and $25 for pain meds during the procedure (plus I got him microchipped while he was out for an additional $30, fyi.) Apparently the Muffins Cert program is done or funded by the city somehow... either way, I bought the cert in person at NYCPets on 5th ave near Union (cash only for the certs) and made the appt last week, brought him in with the cert at 9 this morning and picked him up at 4. Easy as pie. I highly recommend...much cheaper than the $500-$600 animal kind was going to charge me!
  • Glad to hear Bruno is just a little goofy and came through it well. I use PPAC as well - they did Stella's spaying and both of my babies just had a checkup there. They didn't try to sell me crap or push unnecessary vaccines on me

I was really happy that the vet didn't push the two additional optional procedures: blood testing for $125 or IV fluids for $90. He said that since Bruno is young and in good shape (he's had three checkups at animal kind since I got him a few months ago!) that it seemed unnecessary and that obviously if anything went wrong on the operating table they would do whatever was necessary to ensure that he's ok. If PPAC was closer to my apt I would honestly switch from Animal Kind which I've been very happy with but *is* expensive.

also for the record the dog, in his confusion, started pooping on his pad then finished the job while standing *in* his waterbowl. Its both comical and sad...
  • Glad Bruno was safely emasculated!

Do you know which vet you saw at PPAC? We've seen them all, but just curious. Silverman (older guy), Quim (young asian guy), or Holloway (chick).

Oh, and when I called to make the appointment, I got a new person who was so much nicer than the receptionist I usually get (not the vet tech who sometimes mans the phones). That was my only complaint about that place--the receptionist with major attitude.

And Carmen, it is not that far, especially for a dog that can be carried :)
  • Yes, I agree about one of the people who answers the phones. Last time I had to go in, they were much more pleasant.

I've seen Holloway twice and Silverman once.

Carmen - I agree - you can carry Bruno or take a car service and probably still come out cheaper than Animal Kind.
