Open 24 Hours
Hi, all! This is my first post here.
We're moving to 6th ave around 12th st this week, from 86th st in the UES where I live across the street from the 24 hour Gristedes, diner and Duane Reade. We have somewhat odd hours and while I know I'm not getting this kind of convenience in PS, we'd love to know what's open 24 hours in the area, or at least until 2 or 3am, restaurants/bars included, but more importantly bodegas and other marts and pharmacies. The only one you need not note is the CVS on 9th between 5th & 6th.
Thanks!

I am forgetting the names of the two diners that are on 5th avenue and 9th street. Both are open 24 hours. So is the Dunkin donuts there.
-
Yeah, I know Daisy's Diner is open 24hrs. 5th Ave b/w 9th & 10th St.
-
Sidecar at 5th ave and 15th st - kitchen (quality food) is open until 4.
If you're taking the F home, there's two bodegas on 7th ave that are open 24 hours. One is between 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th, orange awning, called Pepper Mill I think. The other is right at the corner of 7th ave and 12th street. The first one has a better food selection, the latter has a better beer selection, iirc.
If you're taking the R home...I think there's also a pizzeria on 5th ave that is open for slices and such pretty late, I don't remember the name but it is on the east side of 5th ave somewhere between 9th and 12th.
Welcome to the neighborhood~ -
welcome to the neighborhood. In terms of Bodegas, theres one on 7th Avenue and 12th Street, 5th and 11th Street, and my favorite Peppermill on 7th Avenue between 10th and 11th. They have beer, wine, and awesome sandwiches. On 5th avenue between 9th and 8th streets is a 24 hour diner. There are a lot of things here that are 24 hour.

CVS Pharmacy on 9th st between 5th & 6th ave is open 24 hrs

Technically Peppermill is a Korean market.
Neergaard Pharmacy on 5th avenue between 9th and 10th St.
Purity Diner 7th Ave corner 7th Street
Seventh Avenue Donuts 7th ave between 8th and 9th St. -
Welcome! We moved out here from the same neighb: from 86th and 1st
-
I live on 86th, at 1st. LOL

You're going to miss Agata & Valentino, Schaller and Weber, and the proximity of so many movie theaters. Also, although the UES is no bastion of great pizza or Chinese food, it's still better than what's available in Park Slope. In every other respect, I think you'll find that your new location is a step up. And it won't be hard to beat Gracie Corner as your local diner.

The Grecian Corner? The Greasy Corner? Another 24-hour establishment, though worthless, and currently on the NYC Dept. of Health's rat list.

Now wait a minute. Nick's has pretty darned good pizza, as do Totono's and Pintails
And if you like Nick's you like Anthony's (Nick has a piece of the action) and it's the same cannoli
But hey that's my opinion and lets not start any more pizza wars
The thing you won't find is bagels as good as off the cart on 86th and 3rd, well bagel hole is close -

Yea, we were on the NE corner I moved there in 97 (from near Union Square) and here 4 1/2 years ago -

NO WAY! I hope that was sarcasm, because Bagel Hole is way better! And Terrace Bagels is another strong neighborhood asset. -

You've tried the bagels from the Turkish guy selling off his cart on the NE corner of 86th and 3rd in Manhattan? This was not the bloated, puffy, cart bagel you usually find but a dense chewy boiled bagel, more dense than Bagel Hole -

No, but now I regret that I didn't. I lived on 85th between 1st and 2nd for 6 years, and the best I could do there was Tal Bagels (not good by any objective standard) and Bagelry (decent, but a long walk, and definitely not in the same league as Bagel Hole). I always walked up the south side of 86th toward the subway, so I never tried the cart on the other side. I wonder where he gets the bagels from. -

He got them in Jersey where he lived.
Too bad you never got to Bagel Bob's on York btwn 86th and 87th. Better than Tal (though I like the apple turnovers at Tal) but not as good as Bagel Hole more on par with Terrace -

I've been to Bagel Bob's. I thought they were ok but nothing special. The only reasons I went to Tal Bagels are: 1) they were closest, admittedly a weak reason; 2) The bagels were tolerable if eaten fresh and hot; 3) their whitefish salad was superb; 4) their nova was also excellent. I always thought of Tal Bagels more of an appetizing store that also sold bagels as a vehicle for the other stuff. Like getting a bagel at Sable's (although not as good as that in the smoked fish department). -
Carnivore, you are making me hungry for a bagel. I might have to walk up to Terrace this morning
One day I'll make the pilgrimage back to Yorkville and see if the bagel cart guy is still there -
7-11 at 5th and 13th!
