Need a good tailor/seamstress

I'm looking for a good tailor or seamstress to alter some dresses. Any recs for someone in the South Slope/Windsor Terrace area?

  • Agnes. At 241 PPW, I think. She used to be next to Dub Pies, but has moved a little further south. Tiny shop, only tailoring, not a dry cleaners. She's fantastic--search the boards and you'll find other rec's for her.

She has done a bridesmaid's dress for me (it needed to practically be remade), hemmed pants, removed pockets, and hemmed some shirts. Her work is excellent (I grew up with a professional seamstress mother and really appreciate good sewing) and she has a good eye for proper fit on an individual.
  • What are her prices like? I have taken jackets elsewhere to get zippers repaired where the price to replace the zipper was almost what a new jacket would cost.
  • For the dress which needed to be totally cut down to a different size, among other things, it was pricey (maybe $80) but probably not expensive considering how much she did. For the hemming and pocket stuff I think it averaged around $6 or $7 per task which seemed good to me, especially for the quality. I've been quoted around $12 for the same hemming at some dry cleaning places.

You could probably go to the shop or call and ask her.

Looks like I had the address wrong:

    270 Prospect Park W # A
    Brooklyn, NY 11215
    (718) 788-2752‎
  • Thanks so much for the response. I'll give her a ring. What's her turnaround like?
  • Definitely less than a week, but I don't really remember. I've never been in a rush.

I think last time I dropped off about 5 things for small alterations and she had it ready by Tuesday or Wednesday.
