Dylan wedding song?
I'm getting married and have always wanted the dance with my father to be to a Bob Dylan song. He brought me up on Dylan and he's one of our favorite artists. I'm sure it's a bit unconventional for many but any thoughts on a good song to dance to? It doesn't have to be relevant to Father-Daughter but just a nice/sweet song.

How about "My Back Pages"? Too serious?
Best line:
"Oh but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now."
Actually, I think this was originally by The Byrds. -
Does it have to be Dylan - I danced to Sunrise/Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof - a real tear jerker
Good luck and lots of love and happiness !! -
Subject: dylan
I just thought Dylan would be more special bc of mine and my dad's respect for his music. I also wanted it to be a surprise.
Have you heard the song Forever Young? I thought that might work. -

Now I know I'm dating myself here, but Alphaville's "Forever Young" is an awesome song! They played that at every dance while I was in high school!

I know, I know... you want a Dylan song. -
Forever Young in a really nice song and the words are beautiful.

How about the William Shatner cover of "Mr. Tambourine Man"?
They'll be rolling in the aisles...

If you haven't heard this before, make sure you listen to the whole clip. It just gets funnier and funnier! -

Here's one better - was talking about this with a young college student at the office here about this exchange and I tell her the only other "Forever Young" song I know is the one by Rod Stewart - to which she says "who is he?" now that makes me feel OLD -
well I wasn't referring to Alphaville's Forever Young, but I do like that song, and it was my prom song.
An excerpt from Dylan's Forever Young:
May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young. -

have you heard his "rocketman"? it is....amazing. there exists, on this wonderful thing called the internet, a video as well, complete with cheesy mirror effect.....
as for the dylan question, can you ask your mom or someone else of his generation who might have insight into what he would find most special? (for that matter, can you talk to him about it? or does that break wedding-code? i don't know the rules here.) -
Wedding Song
by Bob Dylan
I love you more than ever, more than time and more than love,
I love you more than money and more than the stars above,
Love you more than madness, more than waves upon the sea,
Love you more than life itself, you mean that much to me.
Ever since you walked right in, the circle's been complete,
I've said goodbye to haunted rooms and faces in the street,
To the courtyard of the jester which is hidden from the sun,
I love you more than ever and I haven't yet begun.
You breathed on me and made my life a richer one to live,
When I was deep in poverty you taught me how to give,
Dried the tears up from my dreams and pulled me from the hole,
Quenched my thirst and satisfied the burning in my soul.
You gave me babies one, two, three, what is more, you saved my life,
Eye for eye and tooth for tooth, your love cuts like a knife,
My thoughts of you don't ever rest, they'd kill me if I lie,
I'd sacrifice the world for you and watch my senses die.
The tune that is yours and mine to play upon this earth,
We'll play it out the best we know, whatever it is worth,
What's lost is lost, we can't regain what went down in the flood,
But happiness to me is you and I love you more than blood.
It's never been my duty to remake the world at large,
Nor is it my intention to sound a battle charge,
'Cause I love you more than all of that with a love that doesn't bend,
And if there is eternity I'd love you there again.
Oh, can't you see that you were born to stand by my side
And I was born to be with you, you were born to be my bride,
You're the other half of what I am, you're the missing piece
And I love you more than ever with that love that doesn't cease.
You turn the tide on me each day and teach my eyes to see,
Just bein' next to you is a natural thing for me
And I could never let you go, no matter what goes on,
'Cause I love you more than ever now that the past is gone. -
Wediing Song
Peter, Paul & Mary
He is now to be among you at the calling of your hearts
Rest assured this troubador is acting on his part.
The union of your spirits, here, has caused him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in his name
There is love. there is love.
A man shall leave his mother and a woman leave her home
And they shall travel on to where the two shall be as one.
As it was in the beginning is now and til the end
Woman draws her life from man and gives it back again.
And there is love. there is love.
Well then what’s to be the reason for becoming man and wife?
Is it love that brings you here or love that brings you life?
And if loving is the answer, then who’s the giving for?
Do you believe in something that you’ve never seen before?
Oh there’s love, there is love.
Oh the marriage of your spirits here has caused him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in his name
There is love. there is love. -

That song has been used at thousands and thousands of weddings I'm sure, but I still think it is really, really lovely. Makes me cry every time I hear it.
Peter, Paul & Mary -
"forever young" is based on a traditional jewish blessing given from a parent to a child.
hard to beat lyrics, but i'm not sure it's a great dance song. -
hmmm. . . that was me. not a guest.
-
and "wedding song" is great, but not really a father-daughter thing. . . at least, i hope not.
best dylan dance song, simply for turning up loud and rocking out, is "highway 61." perhaps followed by "baby let me follow you down." neither, however, may provide the kind of poetry you're looking for. -
and that peter, paul and mary song is certainly a good choice, especially if you want all your guests to blow chunks. chances are the cake will have enough sugar in it. you needn't feed them more.

"To Ramona" is beautiful. It's kind of sad though.
Ramona, come closer,
Shut softly your watery eyes.
The pangs of your sadness
Shall pass as your senses will rise.
The flowers of the city
Though breathlike, get deathlike at times.
And there's no use in tryin'
T' deal with the dyin',
Though I cannot explain that in lines.
Your cracked country lips,
I still wish to kiss,
As to be under the strength of your skin.
Your magnetic movements
Still capture the minutes I'm in.
But it grieves my heart, love,
To see you tryin' to be a part of
A world that just don't exist.
It's all just a dream, babe,
A vacuum, a scheme, babe,
That sucks you into feelin' like this.
I can see that your head
Has been twisted and fed
By worthless foam from the mouth.
I can tell you are torn
Between stayin' and returnin'
On back to the South.
You've been fooled into thinking
That the finishin' end is at hand.
Yet there's no one to beat you,
No one to defeat you,
'Cept the thoughts of yourself feeling bad.
I've heard you say many times
That you're better than no one
And no one is better than you.
If you really believe that,
You know you got
Nothing to win and nothing to lose.
From fixtures and forces and friends,
Your sorrow does stem,
That hype you and type you,
Making you feel
That you must be exactly like them.
I'd forever talk to you,
But soon my words,
They would turn into a meaningless ring.
For deep in my heart
I know there is no help I can bring.
Everything passes,
Everything changes,
Just do what you think you should do.
And someday maybe,
Who knows, baby,
I'll come and be cryin' to you.
Howdy, Stranger!
