I'm moving into the PH area, can anyone tell me about Eastern Athletic or if there is another gym in the area?

  • Hi! I am a member of the Park Slope Sports Club on Flatbush by Sterling. It is not a fancy gym, very basic and needs some updating and some work but if you have simple needs it is ok. It is also pretty cheap. It is also obscenely crowded between 7 and 8:30 on week-days.

I've belonged to Eastern Athletic for about a year and a half and am happy with it. There are no fancy services like eucalyptus-scented hot towel service, but it is perfectly fine (there *is* a towel service). I joined because of the pool and it has worked out well -- if you are a swimmer I recommend the place. The pool is rarely crowded. The rules are: outside lanes max 4 people at a time, inner 2 lanes one person per lane at a time for 20 minute intervals. So if you are willing to wait 10-15 minutes you can get a lane to yourself for 20 minutes. And the views from the pool are fantastic, especially if the sun is setting.

I've used the weight/treadmill room and stretching room several times. Again, they are not fancy but they are fine. There is a basketball court as well.

I joined for one year upfront -- I seem to remember the monthly breakdown was $80-$85 per month. The club is particular with membership dates -- if you join now you will likely get a membership through November, which is the beginning of their membership year, at which point you renew.
