I've also heard it would be at Berean Baptist Church, on Bergen St bet. Utica and Rochester, which is just around the corner from the precinct. -
Can you post the exact time and location details?
-
While all of you were at the 77th Precinct Council Meeting, there was not one, but two shootouts on Park Place. First one was down nearer to NY Ave and the second about a half hour later on the corner of Nostrand.
The second sounded like the guy was firing a .50 caliber it was so loud.
Hope Ray had something more to say than "we're doing the best we can" because summer hasn't even started yet and its already crazy out here. -
Keep protesting at the Precinct, that always a good way to gain Police support!
-
So because folks protested at the precinct, I got to worry about a bullet flying through my window?
I don't want police support, I WANT SOMEONE TO DO THEIR FUCKING JOB AND ACTUALLY LOCK SOME OF THESE MOTHERFUCKERS UP!
And stop telling me the only way I'll get some service (which I pay a shitload of taxes for) is if I convince my neighbors who clearly don't care about the rules I'm forced to live by to stop dealing, fighting, and shooting each other.
Other people's exercise of their first amendment rights shouldn't impact how zealously police try to stop and or prevent crime. Period. -
gotta say, kwac, that kind of comment is maybe what people don't so much like about cops.
-
KWAC, why do we need to protest at our local precinct to get their support -- that's absurd! If it is obvious to us who is selling, what they're selling and who they're selling to, if the cops were doing their jobs they would know too and make the arrests.
I attended last night's meeting and frankly Ray Kelly did not impress me. His answers were weightless and he skirted around the issues. Many residents had legitimate concerns. It seems a lot of residents are sick and tired of being prisoners in their own homes. The snitching mentality is slowly dying. Many residents seem to be utilizing 311 and their local precinct to give them viable information regarding quality of life issues and drug dealing, etc., but those calls are being mishandled or not handled at all. Other than protesting do you have any other suggestions? -
My comment was in reference to the planned protest at the 77 pct on June 6, in regards to a situation that most of us on here have no knowledge of. As for the Cops doing their job, a lot of the new residents of Crown Heights are unaware that in the early 90's there were almost 100 Homicides recorded in the 77 pct alone. This year alone, overall Crime is down 17% from last year. With far less man power than is past years, I'd argue that the Police are doing a pretty damn good job!!!

KWAC really? Do you honestly believe that what was said to those women and the way they were treated was OK? I am sorry I hold police officers up to a higher standard than that. Wait actually I hold human being up to higher standards than that.
ETA - Mods sorry about posting on this thread - maybe split us off to this one:

Honestly, I have no clue what was said to those women, nor do I condone such behavior if that is in fact what actually happened. However, to protest in front of the Precinct because of the alleged actions of a few officers, only serves to divide and alienate the Police and the Community even further.
-
so we should maybe show up at their houses to protest?
or, let me guess, just shrug our shoulders and say there's never any problem with misbehavior in the nypd? -
KWAC, I'm new to Crown Heights, but I'm not new to Brooklyn. I know what it was like in a lot of neighborhoods in the 90s and many have improved dramatically over the years -- I get that.
I understand that due to budget cuts the police department has less man power, but how is the budget dispersed among the precincts. Does one precinct get more than another? If so, how is that determined? It seems to me that Crown Heights South has a larger, more visible police presence. Why? Do they have more crime? -

KWAC I agree about most cops are good. About 90% of the officers I know are good people, great cops and an asset to the NYPD.
But to add to what you said - we are told by our police officers and community leaders that if we do not tell the police how we feel, what we know, and what we expect of them, then how can they effectively do their job? Well if the police don't listen to the community they represent as well as protect them, then the community will make sure it knows how it feels and what is upsetting them and that takes the form of attending meetings and protesting.
I mean if you are a good cop and you take these things (comments, protests, etc.) personally then maybe you should pick another line of work. -
Hey KWAC, you've mentioned an aversion to protesting in front of the 77PCT. Is this your personal fear of involvement, or are suggesting an alternative collective action?
If its the former, stepping out to take a leadership role does, in fact, have the risk of retribution from members of our uncivil community. At the meeting last night it was discussed that someone had their car firebombed for taking a stand against street level commerce and crime.
However, many of us think there is strength in numbers, and the opportunity to mobilize many, can minimize the threat of a few. Clearly, of neighbors across Eastern Parkway from Kingston to Nostrand have found success with their collective, and now they have NYPD sanctioned patrols, in addition to a community presence of police. Incidentally, they have a long and loud history of protest when the police don't support their interests. After all, if not fearless in taking a stand for our loved ones, we'll have to live in fear.
So if not collective protest, as a counter to the endless parade of made up, fraudulent statistics of how crime is down....I'm curious as to what you may suggest.
Any, and all, ideas I think...are welcome. -
For what it's worth...The 77 was awared a Unit Citation at the NYPD Medal Day today for it's crime reduction initiatives and success in 2008. The 77 led the city in crime reduction last year.
-
Do you want a medal? Oops...I guess you already got one.

I think cops thrive on feedback, like most other people I know. Even criticism. The reason that the other side of EPW gets better policing is because they tell the cops what they like and don't like, in an organized way. Historically I think that Crown Heighs North hasn't been organized. But I think that is changing and continues to change. Several developments in recent years point towards a new vitality here. One of them is this bulletin board. Another is Crown Heights North Assoc. which has been able to get the largest historic district in Brooklyn close to being approved (see you on June 23rd at the Landmark Preservation office hearing, One Centre Street, 9th flr) 10 AM). Another is the Crown Heights Revitalization Movement, which is having a rally on June 25th at the St. Peter Claver RC Church at 7 PM to stop the proposed Homeless Intake Center at Bedford Atlantic Armory. Then there is the election tomorrow night at the Community Board for a new chairperson, to replace the long-serving chairperson, Robert Matthews.
Finally, I just heard from the owner that the new restaurant in the former Legacy Sports will a "fancy sit-down restaurant". The new proprietor operates a restaurant near Utica Avenue and doesn't plan to open the new place until November, giving plenty of time to get the place renovated.
The times, they be a changin'
