Peanuts wrote: I do remember those posts but I took them with a grain of salt...I believe there was also something at the time about Stone Park which turned out to be untrue
As the person who posted the Stone Park tale, I can and will continue to attest to the truthfulness of my post. While it may have seemed extraordinary - it certainly did to us as we were eating there - it actually did happen. And we will never set foot in the place again. You can believe me or not, I don't really care. I think I've established myself as an honest poster.
Of course, the way it was (mis)handled here turned it into an even greater mess. -
Is it definite that Little D is closing?
As for Aunt Suzie's...my friend told me a funny story about how his in-law's were visiting from Michigan and they wanted to take them to Al di La but it was, naturally, packed so they went to Aunt Suzie's instead. To this day his in-law's still talk about how "great" the meal was. If he actually would have gotten into Al di La I'm sure his in-law's would be thinking "$21 Rabbit pappardelle? WTF is that?"
Aunt Suzie's exists solely for out-of-towners, PS parents and their screaming children. -
Tonio's has not been here even close to 50 years (I think it used to be a Spanish place). Their food is so so and Tony is a sleeze (I'm not going to get into that here).
As far as Stone Park...we ate there New Years Eve and they couldn't have treated us better....
As far as taste...to each their own....but I think it's terrible to see all these places close down - the cabinet store on 7th Ave & 8th is closing as well...but last night my hairdresser told me he thinks the old NoNo has been rented. -

Oh, I am so sick of Park Slope parents being lumped into everything, i am a Park Slope parent and yet, I still know what good food tastes like,. i do agree about out of towners, i think people not from NY or people not from areas where there are actual italian people, have no idea what a good red sauce or good italian food should taste like. All they have ever experienced are chain restaurants so they have no idea.

why are so many people complaining about these mediocre restaurants closing?
sure...no one wants to see empty storefronts (i certainly don't) but the only way we are going to get improved retail and dining is for the unsuccessful ones to leave and bring opportunity for a better one to arrive.
the things i see replacing some of these storefronts are far better. i'd much rather have hanco's vietnamese sandwiches than that crappy tea lounge (of which there is already another in the slope). i'd much rather have the new bklyn larder than what was there previous.
tempo became barrio on 7th ave. a step up, in my opinion and it's always packed and full of life now. that corner was SAD before barrio came in.
so while it's sad to see some of these places go and sorry to see people lose their jobs (i had zero interest in elementi or nono or tempo for that matter) let's hope that the next thing that comes in is a step up in quality with even better paying jobs because the places have ACTUAL customers! -
Tempo was NOT a mediocre restaurant.
-
I'm with belzjm. Empty storefronts are a shame, but retail turnover is a GOOD thing. There is no reason a crapfest like Tutta Pasta should still be open, other than the fact that a lot of people have a hankering for really yucky Italian food. Hanco's, Beer Table, Chiles y Chocolate, Brooklyn Larder, S'nice... all good additions to the neighborhood that replaced formerly moribund spaces.
Now, I will seriously freak out if Beer Table ever closes... I love that place so much I want to take it out behind the middle school and get it pregnant. -
Post was taken down -- does that mean it's bullshit?

no, it doesn't mean that. -
8th and prez...i would also be devastated if beer table closed. that place is excellent on so many levels.
you have great taste in restaurants...i love all the ones you listed. -
Why thank you! We ate at Beer Table last night... man, it was good. It's worth the babysitter fees just to be able to eat there.
And re: Aunt Suzie's, I'm sorry to disagree, Daveon8th, but I think it's total drek. Ketchup on noodles. I understand it's an institution, but that doesn't make the food good. -
Well, as some people here have said before. It doesn't matter if you don't like a place, just don't go there but if they're still in business then other people like it. Vote with your wallet. I've been hearing people complain about the same restaurants for years but they're still in business, so who cares?
-
another hidden gem of a great restaurant is moim (garfield, right off 7th).
i hope they are doing well...i need to go back and give them some business. i find it's one of the top 10 in the neighborhoods for sure. -

that was Tempo Presto that became Barrio. the difference between that and the mothership was huge. the actual Tempo would wipe the mat with Barrio.

I agree, though, that some changes (including that one) are positive ones. -

Sorry if my post was confusing....we agree completly about Aunt Suzies...no thanks.

We had a private party at Elementi, in the upstairs private room, and we were treated like gold.
After a different neighborhood establishment SCREWED us over, by taking our reservation months in advance, and then refusing to honor the price they had quoted us per person, Elementi was able to match our price, and did so graciously.
Monday and Tuesday nights had great $30 for 2 people dinner specials, that included a bottle of house wine. I am sorry to see them go. -
it looked like they were open yesterday afternoon when I walked by -- front door/windows wide open, couple of staff members @ the bar, not a single patron that I could see, though...

Not so suprising they are open. Filing doesn't mean the doors close.
I am hoping for "the best" here though. -

What's going into this space?
-
I know what's going in but after the previous debacle I'm not crazy enough to post it here!

Will you confirm if someone guesses it?
My guess: High-end Greek food -
I would welcome high-end Greek food with open arms.
-
I totally agree with Danny (never thought I'd utter those words!).
We can all share arni youvetsi (lamb baked in clay pot with orzo) or perhaps arni exochiko (Surprise Lamb Country Style) or even pastitsio (pasta, meat sauce, and a custard or béchamel sauce). -
Aren't two Greek places in the works for 7th Ave already? Okeanos (corner of 7th and 8th) and supposedly another in the spot where the bagel place used to be near John Jay.
-
I know what is going in here, but I'm not telling either. I could tell, but then I won't know a secret anymore and that would not be fun!
-
Let go of it.
If someone has "insider" information it is their decision to share or not. Either is just fine.
Time will tell.
there was a poster up there... June 4th.. who said they had a private party hosted in Elementi... well I did to and it was that same month (right before they closed).
The food was fine and the people throwing the party were close friends and I was told they were very satisfied with the whole deal.
I made it home and spent the next 3 hours in the bathroom.
Enuf ssid..
Well.. not enf.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.
That is what I really want to say!! -
I don't know the theme, but it seems to be another place run by the folks from Johnny Macks on 8th & 12th.
