not that I particularly want to claim Franny's. -
The dining article was pretty good. I've been meaning to try that place in Clinton Hill for a while now.

Are you also disenchanted with Franny's? I really love their clam pizza and the house-cured pancetta, but a friend recently pointed out that b/c they hike up the wine so much, what should be a $60 dinner for two easily goes up to $100. If you look at it that way, it does seem pretty insane to go there.

Hey, I figured out which button to use to properly reply to someone here! Whee! -

yeah. I'd like Franny's a lot more if they didn't price shit at absurd levels. thank goodness for Amorina. -

I know alafairnadia is anti-Franny's but Mrs. C and I love that place. I agree it's expensive, but their food (especially the appetizers) is definitely a step above most places in the neighborhood . And the pizza is way better than at Amorina... [ducks] -

hahhaa. I will also admit that I only went to Franny's twice, once with my mom who is super critical if she thinks places are overpriced/overblown and once with a "friend" who I wanted to kill (who was, incidentally, dating a complete asshat who insisted on ordering vodka with orange juice and throwing a fit everytime a bartender/waiter said "you mean a screwdriver?"). I've been meaning to go back with another friend who is big into going to restaurants that get a lot of press.
I DO think that Franny's is totally overpriced and gets way more press than they deserve, but apparently the owners are friends with all sorts of media folks. and, finally, they are NOT in Park Slope and I wish they'd stop pimping themselves as such.

Hmm. I actually think the food is pretty reasonably priced, w/ the exception of the crostini, but it's the damn wine. I don't know why they don't allow you to BYO and just charge a corking fee.

B/c of licensing costs, a lot of small restaurants in Philly are BYO -- most of the newer ones are, actually. Which makes dining out such a deal and means people go out to eat more than they otherwise would. As with most things, Philly does it better:) Wondering when the restaurateurs here will catch on. -

Franny's is pretty crowded pretty much all the time with their current pricing and no-BYO policy. I don't know what incentive they'd have to give up all that money.

Good point. Also, do they not have babysitters in Bklyn? I am sick of having to shimmy between all the humongous strollers there.
Speaking of large, unwieldy furniture -- is hotness a prereq for design school? Who are these people and where do they live? -- cuz I certainly have not seen them around our hood.

I've never been to Franny's, but Amorina f*cking rules.
One restaurant/bar I wished they'd mentioned was "June" in Fort Greene (on Dekalb). The service blows, but the food is excellent, simple, and stylish; the specialty drinks blow your mind; and the bar is impeccably designed and very comfortable (and never crowded). Numnumnum. -
ALSO
how many people here think that Washington Ave would look HOT with some conversions like this:
http://nymetro.com/guides/brooklyn/style/16787/
SO MANY AUTOSHOPS. It's a modernist's dream. Although i think it would have been better to stick with a burnt- or burnished-metal look in the exterior, to preserve the grittiness of the autoshop. Preserves continuity. Modernism is interpreted nowadays as far too 'clean'. -

Can somebody lend me $5K to buy a chair that looks like someone took it from their grandparents' attic to the street? I've got to keep up with the Williamsburgers....

Please tell me the Bungalow 8/coke culture has not infested our fair neighborhood. I love living in PH for that very reason -- Manhattan can have their gilded snow spoons.

Oh, I'm sure that if it becomes harder to get a liquor license, NY restaurants will see the light!
As for Franny's I have to agree with the pricing complaints. When we first moved here from Carroll Gardens, Mr. M and I, accustomed to going out to eat several times a week àdeux, tried Franny's a few times. We'd been spoiled by the plethora of cheap places in CG and after the first few times at Franny's, we realized that we kept spending a lot of money there. So we stopped going there as a midweek, fun-evening kind of place. But, at the same time, it doesn't really have the kind of atmosphere that I'd want for a date-night kind of evening. So most of the time it just doesn't occur to us to go there. -

right? sorry, Boobear, but coke use is alive and well in PH. I'm not entirely certain how it's come to this, but I have witnessed huge groups of dudes from LI come to local bars and ask EVERYONE where the dealer is (and they know his name). it's really disturbing. but yeah, those pegged-pant asshats brought more than ugly clothes to the nabe. -

Honestly, I do not judge when it comes to people and their candy of choice, nor am I one to talk. But I have always loved the idea of crossing the Manhattan bridge and leaving all that silliness behind for Brooklyn, where the sun shines and the birds sing and people go to the bathroom one at a time. -
I dig Franny's, and while a bit more expensive than other spots, I think it's worth it. Everything is made from scratch, from the sausage on down, and the organic/sustainable approach is something worth the extra cash. I think the whole wood-burning oven set-up may also drive some of the operating costs, as I've heard the environmental and building requirements around such things are daunting.
If I want cheaper, I go elsewhere. -

I agree. In the case of Franny's you really do get what you pay for.

I'd love to go skiing...

One: Coke is a stupid drug used by stupid people. There is nothing fashionable about it. The buzz sucks. You do dumb shit. Damn addictive too.
Two: Franny's pizza is middle of the road. Their appetizers are damn good though. What really sucks is their wine list and prices. They had a no-oak chardonnay that, seriously, costs $11 max a bottle at the store. $45 on their list. The server tried to push wine from the top of the list down. Low class. A good server starts with third up from the bottom and lets you fall back one on the list to the $30-32 bottle of wine. This is usually the best bang for the buck and their best profit bottle. It is amatuer hour in re wines there. If I want to be treated right with regard to wine I go to Convivium. -
Places as constantly busy as Franny's are always suspect for me. But thanks for the heads-up on the wine list. I'm sure I'll egt around to trying it sooner or later..
-
Sorrel has lots of reasonably priced wines and also does the Greenmarket/seasonal menu thing. It's very good. I blame the Times for ruining Franny's -- one of their writers is totally obsessed with the couple that runs the place, and for a while there was devoting a piece every other week to them. So whoever said Franny's has no incentive to bring their wine list back down to Earth is absolutely correct. It would just be super-neighborly if they did, is all I'm sayin'.
And re Amorino's, I will put it on my list. Am a big-time Philly pizza snob (the romance with Franny's notwithstanding). Bad pizza hurts my feelings
